Matt Brase (born June 15, 1982) is an American professional basketball coach who is an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the head coach of Haiti men's national basketball team.

Playing career

Brase played for University of Arizona and led the team to the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, where they reached the Elite Eight in 2005. [1] He was coached by his grandfather, basketball coach Lute Olson, from 2003 to 2005.

College coaching career

After graduation, Brase served in different capacities in the Arizona Wildcats basketball department. After being promoted to assistant coach at Arizona during the 2009, his team reached the Sweet 16. [2]

For the 2009–11 seasons, Brase served as an assistant coach at Grand Canyon University while studying for his master's degree in business administration with a focus on leadership. [3]

Professional coaching career

The Houston Rockets hired him in 2011. During the 2011–12 season he worked as part of the Rockets basketball operations staff focusing on player personnel and scouting college, international and NBA players. In 2012–2013 Brase served as an assistant coach for Rio Grande Valley Vipers. In 2013, he became the Director of Operations for the Houston Rockets. The Houston Rockets named him the head coach for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers beginning the 2015 season. [4] In 2018, he became an Assistant coach for the Houston Rockets [5] and led the team to an NBA D-League Western Conference title. [6]

On July 6, 2022, he became the head coach of Pallacanestro Varese in the Italian Lega Basket Serie A (LBA). [7]

On September 5, 2023, Brase became an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers. [8]

Personal life

Brase’s father, Jon, is a dentist. He played baseball at Iowa. Brase's sister played for University of Arizona's women’s basketball team before becoming a coach at Loyola Marymount and then with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury. His mother, Jody, is the daughter of Lute Olson, and the Principal at Catalina Foothills High School. [9]

Robert Luther "Lute" Olson was an American basketball coach, who was inducted into both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. He was the head coach of the Arizona Wildcats men's team for 25 years. He was also head coach for the Iowa Hawkeyes for nine years and Long Beach State 49ers for one season. Known for player development and great recruiting, many of his former players have gone on to have impressive careers in the NBA. On October 23, 2008, Olson announced his retirement from coaching. Olson died on August 27, 2020, in Tucson, Arizona. He was 85 years old.

Miles Julian Simon is an American basketball coach and former player who is an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns of the NBA.

Hersey R. Hawkins Jr. is an American former professional basketball player. After starring at Chicago's Westinghouse High School, the 6'3" shooting guard attended Bradley University. Hawkins played for 4 teams throughout his 12-year National Basketball Association career. Hersey was given his nickname, “The Big Kiss”, by David Gborie.

Jeffery Douglas West is an American former professional basketball player who is an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). A 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) swingman from Villanova University, West was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the 1989 NBA draft. An athletic, well-rounded player who could score as well as defend, West was an "original" Timberwolf, being drafted by the team in its first year of existence. He was the last of the original roster to remain on the team.

The Rio Grande Valley Vipers are an American professional basketball team of the NBA G League based in Edinburg, Texas, and are affiliated with the Houston Rockets. The Vipers have won four league titles in 2010, 2013, 2019, and 2022, the most for any club in league history, and they also have made the most championship series in league history, having made it seven times to the finals. James M. Rosborough is an American basketball coach. Rosborough began his career coaching basketball in 1970 in Chicago at Corkery Junior High, before being hired as an assistant coach in 1974 by Lute Olson at Iowa. Rosborough and Olson coached together for nine seasons at Iowa, reaching five consecutive NCAA tournament berths and reaching the 1980 NCAA Final Four. Rosborough coached briefly at Tulsa (1985-1986) and as head coach at NIU (1986-1989) before rejoining Olson in 1989 as an assistant, and eventual associate head coach, at Arizona through 18 seasons. The team was a prominent collegiate basketball program in the United States throughout the 90's and 00's, reaching 18 consecutive NCAA tournament berths, eight Pac-10 championships, three NCAA Final Fours, and winning the 1997 NCAA Championship. Rosborough coached over 50 All-American, all-conference and future NBA players during his time at Arizona. Rosborough was inducted to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2001.

Will Weaver is an American professional basketball coach who most recently served as head coach for Paris Basketball of the LNB Pro A. He previously was as an assistant coach for the Australian national basketball team.
