Matt Saunders (born 1975) is a contemporary artist who is known for his work across diverse media, including painting, photography, video installation and printmaking.

Life

Saunders was born in Tacoma, Washington and grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. After earning degrees from Harvard College (1997, AB, Visual and Environmental Studies). [1] and the Yale School of Art (2002, MFA in Painting and Printmaking), [2] Saunders lived and worked for about a decade in Berlin, Germany before returning to teach at Harvard University, where he is currently Harris K. Weston Associate Professor of the Humanities. [3]

Work

Grounded in a practice of painting, [3] Saunders works in a variety of media, most notably large format photographs produced without a camera, as well as complex installations of hand-painted animated videos, which are projected across canvases and other “screens.”

Saunders’ earliest work included ink drawings and oil paintings on mylar, and later a series of “silver paintings” using silver ink and oils. [4] Beginning around 2008 he started the exploration of photography that he continues to this day. In the past several years, Saunders has collaborated with the printmaker Niels Borch Jensen on large-scale and experimental photogravures and etchings from copper plates. [5]

For his photographs, Saunders creates paintings, which he uses as negatives. “Canvas, oil paint, mylar, and related media — what, in other hands, might be framed and put on a wall — become the ‘negatives’ through which light is passed onto photographic paper,” explains Rob Colvin for Hyperallergic. [6] These often-unique prints sit provocatively between painting and photography.

In his video installations, Saunders is just as attentive to light and materials, animating “elliptical, often abstract” passages that range freely between representation and abstraction. [7]

Since the beginning of his career, Saunders often references the history of film. “Drawing imagery from his own idiosyncratic photo archive of old cinema and television, Saunders breathes new life into them through a process both labored and tender,” writes curator Matthew Thompson. [8] Hamza Walker observes that “[b]ased on Matt Saunders’ work, painting is capable of soliciting from cinema an uncanny dimension of cultural memory.” [9] Saunders uses source material in personal and self-reflexive ways. In an article on the artist in Artforum, Lisa Turvey writes: "Saunders’ immediate precursors are, of course, the Pictures-generation artists, and like many of his contemporaries he has internalized their use of photobased, preexisting imagery in the service of a practice unbound by medium or temporality. But he refuses the abjuration of self typical of that art, and closes up the distinction on which it turned." [10] Although often portrait-based, "technique is as much a protagonist as the portraits themselves," [11] and Saunders interrogates the medium of painting through multiple means, in works that can be figurative, landscape or abstract.

Exhibitions

Solo museum and institutional exhibitions include the Renaissance Society, Chicago (2010); [12] Tate Liverpool (2012); [13] Tank Shanghai (2017) [14] and the St. Louis Museum of Art (2017). [15] He has mounted numerous solo gallery exhibitions including with the Marian Goodman Gallery in New York (2015), London (2018) and Paris (2011, 2014, 2016); with Blum & Poe in Los Angeles (2011, 2014) and Tokyo (2016); with Harris Lieberman in New York (2006, 2009, 2010, 2013) and also with Niels Borch Jensen (Berlin), Martin Asbaek (Copenhagen), Analix Forever (Geneva), Almine Rech (Paris) and Grimm Rosenfeld/ Andreas Grimm (Munich). His work has been included in notable group exhibitions in venues such as the Whitney Museum, MassMOCA, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Deutsche Guggenheim, Drawing Room (London), Aspen Art Museum, Adams Art Gallery (Wellington, NZ), Presentation House (Vancouver), deCordova Museum (Lincoln, MA), Sabanci Museum (Istanbul), the Prague Biennial 2003 and the 2011 Sharjah Biennial.

Collections: Saunders’ work is found in many public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Solomon B. Guggenheim Museum, Tate Collection, San Franciscso Museum of Modern Art, Hammer Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, St. Louis Museum of Art, Istanbul Modern and the Museum Brandhorst.

Awards: Saunders is the recipient of the 2015 Rappaport Prize, [16] the 2013 Prix Jean-François Prat [17] and a 2009 Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation award [18]

Inka Essenhigh American painter

Inka Essenhigh is an American painter based in New York City. Throughout her career, Essenhigh has had solo exhibitions at galleries such as Deitch Projects, Mary Boone Gallery, 303 Gallery, Stefan Stux Gallery, and Jacob Lewis Gallery in New York, Tomio Koyama Gallery in Tokyo, and Il Capricorno in Venice.

Simon Martin is a British artist living and working in London. Martin is known for his video works.

Larry Poons American abstract painter

Lawrence M. "Larry" Poons is an American abstract painter. Poons was born in Tokyo, Japan, and studied from 1955 to 1957 at the New England Conservatory of Music, with the intent of becoming a professional musician. After seeing Barnett Newman's exhibition at French and Company in 1959, he gave up musical composition and enrolled at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He also studied at the Art Students League of New York. Poons taught at The Art Students League from 1966–1970 and currently teaches at the League.

Dike Blair American visual artist

Dike Blair is a New York-based artist, writer and teacher. His art consists of two parallel bodies of work: intimate, photorealistic paintings and installation-like sculptures assembled from common objects—often exhibited together—which examine overlooked and unexceptional phenomena of daily existence in both a romantic and ironic manner. Blair emerged out of the late 1970s New York art scene, and his work relates to concurrent movements such as the Pictures Generation, Minimalism and conceptual art, while remaining distinct from and tangential to them. New York Times critic Roberta Smith places his sculpture in a "blurred category" crossing "Carl Andre with ikebana, formalist abstraction with sleek anonymous hotel rooms, talk-show sets with home furnishings showrooms." Cameron Martin writes in Artforum that the paintings are "rendered with a lucidity that extracts something metaphysical from the mundane."

Stephen Prina is an American artist. His work has been categorized as post-conceptualism. Prina is a professor at the Department of Visual and Environmental Studies (VES) at Harvard University.

Sanford Biggers is a Harlem-based interdisciplinary artist who works in film/video, installation, sculpture, music, and performance. An L.A. native, he has lived and worked in New York City since 1999.

Nicole Eisenman American artist

Nicole Eisenman is an American artist primarily known for her paintings. Eisenman was a professor at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson from 2003 to 2009. She has been awarded the Guggenheim fellowship (1996), the Carnegie Prize (2013), and has thrice been included in the Whitney Biennial. On September 29, 2015, she won the MacArthur "Genius Grant" award for "restoring the representation of the human form a cultural significance that had waned during the ascendancy of abstraction in the 20th century". Eisenman currently lives and works in Brooklyn.

Alison M. Gingeras is an American curator and writer, based in New York and Warsaw. She has held positions at numerous institutions including the Guggenheim Museum, the Musée national d'art moderne, Centre Pompidou and the Palazzo Grassi. As a writer she contributes to publications such as Artforum, Parkett and Tate Etc. When working as curator for contemporary art at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, she organized several exhibitions, including ‘Dear Painter, Paint Me: Painting the Figure Since Late Picabia’; ‘Daniel Buren Le Musee qui n’existait pas’, as well as projects with Urs Fischer, Thomas Hirschhorn and Kristin Baker. In 2005, she was a co-curator of Daniel Buren: ‘The Eye of the Storm’ at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. She has been curating a small project space in New York's east village since 2012 called Oko.

Eileen Quinlan is a self-described still-life photographer who shoots with medium format and large format cameras. An art critic for Art in America likened her style to that of Moholy-Nagy and James Welling.

Joan Kee is an art historian specializing in modern and contemporary art. Her book, Contemporary Korean Art: Tansaekhwa and the Urgency of Method, published by University of Minnesota Press in 2013, is credited with sparking global interest in Dansaekhwa, a major constellation of abstract paintings produced in South Korea from the 1960s. In 2014, she curated From All Sides: Tansaekhwa and the Urgency of Method, a group show of representative Tansaekhwa artists that was widely acclaimed. She has been cited as Tansaekhwa's most prominent Anglophone scholar. Kee teaches at the University of Michigan where she is Associate Professor in the History of Art. Her latest book, Models of Integrity: Art and Law in Post-Sixties America, was published February 2019. The book includes discussion of the following artists, among others; Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Gordon Matta-Clark, Tehching Hsieh, Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Sally Mann. Kee is a contributing editor to Artforum, advisory editor to the Oxford Art Journal, editor at large for the Brooklyn Rail, and also sits on the international advisory board of Art History. She has been cited in reference to artists like Zao Wou-ki, Gordon Matta-Clark, and to Park Seobo.

Paula Wilson American artist

Paula Wilson is an African-American "mixed media" artist creating works examining women's identities through a lens of cultural history. She uses sculpture, collage, painting, installation, and printmaking methods such as silkscreen, lithography, and woodblock. In 2007 Wilson moved from Brooklyn, New York to Carrizozo, New Mexico where she currently lives and works with her woodworking partner Mike Lagg.

Kerstin Kartscher

Kerstin Kartscher (*1966) is a German artist who lives and works in London. Her central medium is drawing. Often her works evolve out of combining finely detailed drawings with found objects, or man made materials, that can be merged in installations. Kartscher creates drawings and installations of imaginary worlds populated by nameless heroines who celebrate their femininity, liberated from social, emotional and psychological constraints, within fantastical, elegant and immense landscapes.

Gala Porras-Kim is a contemporary interdisciplinary artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work has been shown at the Whitney, LACMA, and the Hammer Museum. Much of her work deals with time, and the way the perception of objects changes over time.


Kenny Rivero is a Dominican-American visual artist who makes paintings, drawings, and sculptures that explore the complexity of identity through narrative images, collage and assemblage, language, and symbolism. Rivero is currently a Lecturer in Painting and Printmaking at the Yale School of Art and a Visiting Artist at The Cooper Union.

Carissa Rodriguez is an American artist who lives and works in New York City.

Karyn Olivier American artist (born 1968)

Karyn Olivier is a Philadelphia-based artist who creates public art, sculptures, installations and photography. Olivier alters familiar objects, spaces, and locations, often reinterpreting the role of monuments. Her work intersects histories and memories with present-day narratives.
