Matt Sloan is an Australian visual effects supervisor. He was previously a special effects and animatronics technician. [1]

Early life

Sloan grew up on a farm. [2] He studied geology in university. [1]

Career

Sloan got his start in the film industry as a "runner" and pyrotechnician for the special effects team of Fortress (1992) in 1991. [1] [3] [4]

He began transitioning from special effects to visual effects around 2000. [1]

As the filming for Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith were moved to Australia, Sloan filled in for the role of Jedi Master Plo Koon due to financial practicality as he matched the height of the previous actor. [2] He was the lead animatronics foreman for Episode II and was the droid unit technician for Episode III. [2]

Sloan has worked as a technical director on Avatar (2009), The Avengers (2012), and The Hobbit (film series) for Weta Digital. [3]

In 2013, he moved from Weta to 20th Century Fox, where he worked as a visual effects supervisor on the X-Men (film series) and The Martian (2015). [3]

John Knoll is an American visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer (CCO) at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). One of the original creators of Adobe Photoshop, he has also worked as visual effects supervisor on the Star Wars prequels and the 1997 special editions of the original trilogy. He also served as ILM's visual effects supervisor for Star Trek Generations and Star Trek: First Contact, as well as the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Along with Hal Hickel, Charles Gibson and Allen Hall, Knoll and the trio's work on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest earned them the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Christian Rivers is a New Zealand storyboard artist, visual effects supervisor, special effects technician, and director. He first met Peter Jackson as a 17-year-old, and storyboarded all of Jackson's films since Braindead. He made his directing debut in the film adaptation of Mortal Engines, and planning a remake of The Dam Busters, both produced by Peter Jackson.

Pixomondo (PXO) is an Academy and Emmy award-winning international visual effects and virtual production company with studios in Los Angeles, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, and London. The company provides virtual production and visual effects for feature films, television, and commercials. As of 2019, PXO employs over 655 people worldwide.

DNEG is a British visual effects, computer animation, and stereo conversion studio that was founded in 1998 in London, and rebranded as DNEG in 2014 after a merger with Indian VFX company Prime Focus, it was named after the letters "D" and "Neg" from their former name.

A special effects supervisor, also referred to as a special effects director, special effects coordinator or SFX supervisor, is an individual who works on a commercial, theater, television or film set creating special effects. They are generally the department head who defers to the film's director and/or producers, and who is in charge of the entire special effects team. Special effects include anything that is manually or mechanically manipulated. This may include the use of mechanized props, special effects makeup, props, scenery, scale models, pyrotechnics and atmospheric effects: creating physical wind, rain, fog, snow, clouds etc.
