Matthew James Barton (born 5 September 1995 [1] ) is a British windsurfer. He competes in windsurfing in the IQFoil class and won silver in the 2021 IQFoil World Championships. [2]
Matthew Barton started windsurfing aged 12 at Alton Water Sailing Club and started racing with Team15 club Alton Water Wipeouts coached by Ian (Rocky) Haywood. [3] By October 2008, he took 3rd place in the Champions Cup 4.5m class. [4] From here, he transitioned to 5.5m open class before competing nationally on the Techno 293 board in the 6.8m class.
He took part in his first international competition at the Junior and Youth world Championships held in Martigues, France in 2010. [5]
Following this, we completed both nationally and internationally in the RS:X youth class before competing in the open class.
He joined the British Sailing Team in 2017 as part of the Podium Potential Pathway squad and took up windsurfing full time following graduation.
In 2019, Matthew transitioned to windfoiling and started to compete in the class during the 2020 season. He currently competes in the Olympic class IQFoil.
His biggest achievements have come in the IQFoil class and in 2020 he achieved a 1st place in the IQ Foil Class of the Formula Foil World Championships followed by a 5th place finish in the IQFoil International Games. This was followed up in 2021 by a 3rd place finish in the IQFoil International Games and a 2nd place in the IQFoil World Championships.
Matthew Barton (born 5 September 1995) grew up near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk.
He studied Health Sciences at University of Exeter between 2014 and 2017. During this time, he was part of the University of Exeter Sailing Club and was commodore for the club in 2016-2017. In 2017 he competed in the BUCS windsurfing competition, which he won. During his tenure as commodore of the club, Exeter University Sailing Club won club of the year and Matthew won club captain of the year at University of Exeter Athletic Union annual awards.
Sir Charles Benedict Ainslie is a British competitive sailor. Ainslie is the most successful sailor in Olympic history. He won medals at five consecutive Olympics from 1996 onwards, including gold at four consecutive Games from 2000 to 2012.
A sailing hydrofoil, hydrofoil sailboat, or hydrosail is a sailboat with wing-like foils mounted under the hull. As the craft increases its speed the hydrofoils lift the hull up and out of the water, greatly reducing wetted area, resulting in decreased drag and increased speed. A sailing hydrofoil can achieve speeds exceeding double and in some cases triple the wind speed.
Mayan Rafic is an Israeli windsurfer who won gold in the Techno 293 class competition at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics and silver in the Youth Men competition at the 2013 RS:X Windsurfing Youth World Championships.
The Techno 293 is a development of the Aloha class and is primarily for the youth windsurfing class. The class is recognised by the International Sailing Federation. The design was chosen to be the windsurfer for the Youth Olympic Games.
Paweł Aleksander Maria Tarnowski is a Polish sailor, son of Jacek Tarnowski, and Monika Wanicka. Tarnowski already competed at the top-level when he was a teenager, becoming a multiple medal winner in Junior World Championships. In 2011 and 2012, he won a gold medal at the RS:X Junior World Championships, and he won medals in European Champion. In first he started in classes Techno 293 class and then the RS:X class, (including in a category age under 17 and under 21 years of age. He competed in the 2024 Olympics in the iQfoil class and came 10th.
Onur Cavit Biriz is a Turkish windsurfer, who currently competes in IQFoil class. He is a student at Izmir University of Economics. He is an alumnus of Cağaloğlu Anadolu Lisesi.
Saskia Sills is a world champion British windsurfer and member of the British Sailing Team. She has competed in international events such as the European championships, and has been part of the British Sailing team from 2013 to present as a windsurfer initially in the RS:X (Women) Class, and more recently in the IQFoil class.

Katy Spychakov is an Israeli windsurfer. Spychakov won the 2015 Female Under 17 Techno 293 World Championships, the 2016 RS:X Class Youth Female World Championships, and the 2019 U21 Women's RS:X World Championships. She won a silver medal in the Women's 2019 RS:X World Championships.
Emma Wilson is a British windsurfer who won a bronze medal in the RS:X event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. She won the RS:X events at the Youth Sailing World Championships in 2016 and 2017, and won medals at the 2018 and 2019 RS:X European Championships, and the 2022 and 2023 IQFoil European Championships. She won her second Olympic bronze medal in the iQFoil at the 2024 Paris Games.
iQFoil is a windsurfing class selected by World Sailing to replace the RS:X for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The discipline has similarities to Formula Windsurfing, however a notable difference is that sailors only use one sail. The sail size is 9m² for the men and 8m² for the women. The rider has a choice between using a hydrofoil or a conventional 68 cm fin.
Katya Ida Coelho is an Indian professional windsurfer who is currently India's only Women iQFoiler and the first Indian to win an IQFoil Medal at the International Windsurfing Cup in July 2022 in Pattaya, Thailand.
Sailing competitions at the 2024 Summer Olympics were held from July 28th to August 8th at Marseille Marina. The number of sailors competing across ten different events at these Games has been reduced from 350 to 330, with an equal distribution between men and women. Mateus Ghannam Isaac is a Brazilian windsurfer. He has six titles in World Tour championships in the IQFoil class, and was in the lead in the world rankings in 2022.
Sharon Kantor is an Israeli world champion and Olympic windsurfer. Competing in the IQFoil class, she won the silver medal at the 2023 European Championships, and the gold medal at the 2024 World Championships. Representing Israel at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Kantor won the silver medal in the Women's IQ Foil in Marseille, France.
Merve Vatan is a Turkish sailor competing in the windsurfing class IQFoil. She qualified to participate at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.
Marta Maggetti is an Italian windsurfer who sailed in the RS:X class and then later the iQFoil windsurfer class. She was fourth in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 on a windsurfer and in 2022 she won the IQFoil World Championship. She won a gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics
Grae Morris is an Australian sailor. He competed in the IQFoil event at the 2024 Summer Olympics, where he won the silver medal.
