Matthias Kadar (born 1977) is a French/ German composer and singer.

Biography

Kadar was born in Paris to Hungarian-German parents in 1977. After a short period of time studying economics, he decided to focus on music and composition. He studied with Christian Lauba in Bordeaux and later with Theo Loevendie at the conservatorium in Amsterdam. In his œuvre, there are about two hundred pieces for most instruments including a book for piano (Der Virtuos), a book of songs for baritone voice and piano based on poems in German, Hungarian and French, a small theater piece (Cyrano) and a Concerto for violin and orchestra (Aede).

Career

Most of his works have had public performances at different festivals all over the world, such as the Mahler festival in Budapest, Ireland, Japan, USA, Salzburger Festspiele.

He has written works for the Budapest Festival Orchestra conducted by Iván Fischer, Stichting het 20ste eeuwse lied, the Leo Smit Ensemble, the Oh-Ton Ensemble (Germany), the Nieuw Ensemble, Het Trio, the Hexagon Ensemble, the Ricciotti Ensemble, the National youth choir of the Netherlands, the Nederlands Kamerkoor, and for Harry Sparnaay, Annelie de Man, Arno Bornkamp, Masumi Nagasawa, Reinild Mees, Irene Maessen, Thomas Oliemans, Roger Braun, Ralph van Raat, Klárá Würtz, József Lendvay, Iván Fischer, and Isidor Lateiner.

As a singer and chansonnier, he, in addition to his work as a soloist, performs together with the Budapest Festival Orchestra in an opera of Iván Fischer or with different groupes.

At the National Remembrance Ceremony on May 4, 2009, in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam in the presence of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Prince Willem Alexander, Princess Máxima, and government officials and members of parliament, two compositions of his for women quire and tenor solo were performed: Is dit een mens written by Primo Levi and translated by Jan van der Haar, and Navertellen written by Wim de Bie. These compositions were commissioned by the Nationaal Comité 4 en 5 mei of the Netherlands.

In 2012 Kadar, along with the Dutch Chamber Choir, presented a number of concerts he had composed and arranged and was invited to perform as a soloist and presentator.

From 2012 to 2014, he performed as a soloist singer with dance groupe LeineRoebana in the production NexT.

Until 2014, he was part of the Trio de Passage together with saxophonist Hester Cnossen and puppeteer Feike Boschma.

In 2014 his composition for orchestra Lebam, commissioned by the NSO orchestra and the Dutch Performing Art Funds, was performed in the 10 great halls of The Netherlands including the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam.

In 2015, his composition Peintures for the David Kweksilber Bigband and Leo van Oostrom as a saxophone soloist was performed at a Jazz Jubilee in Arnhem and in the Bimhuis in Amsterdam.

In 2016, his new composition on Casanova was performed by himself as a soloist and the ensemble of the Ij-Salon consisting mainly of players of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Hendrik Pienaar Hofmeyr is a South African composer. Born in Cape Town, he furthered his studies in Italy during 10 years of self-imposed exile as a conscientious objector. While there, he won the South African Opera Competition with The Fall of the House of Usher. He also received the annual Nederburg Prize for Opera for this work subsequent to its performance at the State Theatre in Pretoria in 1988. In the same year, he obtained first prize in an international competition in Italy with music for a short film by Wim Wenders. He returned to South Africa in 1992, and in 1997 won two major international composition competitions, the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition of Belgium and the first edition of the Dimitris Mitropoulos Competition in Athens. His 'Incantesimo' for solo flute was selected to represent South Africa at the ISCM World Music Days in Croatia in 2005. In 2008 he was honoured with a Kanna award by the Kleinkaroo National Arts Festival. He is currently Professor and Head of Composition and Theory at the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town, where he obtained a DMus in 1999.

Bruce Mather is a Canadian composer, pianist, and writer who is particularly known for his contributions to contemporary classical music. One of the most notable composers of microtonal music, he was awarded the Jules Léger Prize twice, first in 1979 for his Musique pour Champigny and again in 1993 for Yquem. Some of his other awards include the Composers, Authors and Publishers Association of Canada's Micheline Coulombe Saint-Marcoux prize in 1987 for Barbaresco and the Serge Garant Prize from the Émile Nelligan Foundation in 2000.

Lior Navok is an Israeli classical composer, conductor and pianist. He was born in Tel Aviv. His music has been performed internationally by orchestras and ensembles including the Oper Frankfurt, Nuernberg Opera, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and the Tanglewood Festival Orchestra. Amongst the awards he has received are those from the Israel Cultural Excellence Foundation and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
