Matthias Schuke (born 7 July 1955) is a German organ builder.

Career

Born in Potsdam, Schuke is the son of the organ builder Hans-Joachim Schuke. He attended the "Polytechnische Oberschule 24", now the Eisenhardtschule Potsdam, from 1962 and graduated with a high school diploma. From September 1972 to June 1974, he trained as a cabinetmaker at the Richard Praetsch carpentry workshop in Babelsberg.

In 1974, he began training as an organ builder in the "Volkseigener Betrieb" Potsdamer Schuke Orgelbau, went through the wood workshop, tin workshop, restoration and voicing departments and completed his training in 1977. During this time, Matthias Schuke also completed his Abitur at evening school. From 1977 to 1985 he worked mainly in the field and in voicing. In 1985, he began his training as a master organ builder. In 1988 he passed the master craftsman's examination. His masterpiece, a 4-register chest organ, stands today in the Erlöserkirche Potsdam.

In 1990, Schuke managed to successfully reprivatise the company in the course of the political and economic Peaceful Revolution. [1] and has since been the owner and managing director of Alexander Schuke Potsdam Orgelbau  [ en ]

In 1998, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in his capacity as a committed personality in German organ building.

In 2001, his company achieved 1st place in the Technology Transfer Prize of the Technology Foundation of the State of Brandenburg, together with the University of Potsdam. In addition, the company received the Professor Adalbert Seifriz Prize 2001, [2] a nationwide craft prize from the Steinbeis Foundation in Stuttgart with Reimund Gerhard, University of Potsdam.

In 2003, Schuke decided to leave the old, too small workshop premises in the centre of Potsdam and to build a new company headquarters in Werder (Havel). In February 2004, the company moved into the new workshop premises. At the end of November 2017, he announced that he would gradually hand over the company to his sons Johannes (born 1985) and Michael (born 1989). [3] The sons joined the company management in 2018. During his time as managing director, Matthias Schuke and his company were able to realise major projects in the Erfurt Cathedral, the Zamora, Michoacán, in the Magdeburg Cathedral and in the Königsberg Cathedral. [5] Also worth mentioning are the restorations he carried out on historically valuable organs, e.g. the organs of St Stephen's Church, Tangermünde as well as of St. Peter and Paul Cathedral and of the St Marien (Angermünde)  [ de ].

At the end of World War II, the firm was nationalised by the Czech government and merged with another workshop as Rieger-Kloss. The Rieger tradition was also continued by the owners and workers of the original firm, who moved to Austria and founded a new workshop as "Rieger Orgelbau".

Orgelbau Vleugels is a pipe organ company producing organs in modern design and restoring historic instruments. The workshop is located in Hardheim, Germany. The owner is master pipe organ builder Hans-Georg Vleugels. The company has a history spanning over 150 years.

Wilhelm Sauer German organ builder (1831–1916)

Wilhelm Carl Friedrich Sauer was a German pipe organ builder. One of the famous organ builders of the Romantic period, Sauer and his company W. Sauer Orgelbau built over 1,100 organs during his lifetime, amongst them the organs at Bremen Cathedral, Leipzig's St. Thomas Church, and Berlin Cathedral, which is considered to be "his final great masterpiece".

Johann Friedrich Schulze German organ builder (1793–1858)

Johann Friedrich Schulze was a German organ builder, from a family of organ builders. The company built major organs in Northern Germany and England.

Orgelbau Mebold is a company building pipe organs in Siegen, Germany. It was founded in 1967 by Hans Peter Mebold, and has been run since 2018 by his son Mathias Mebold. The company builds new organs, restores historic instruments, and specializes in portable small instruments (Truhenorgel).

Orgelbau Pieringer is an Austrian organ building company based in the city of Haag in Lower Austria. The founder and owner of the company is the Haag organ builder Johann Pieringer. Orgelbau Pieringer is a reputable organ workshop active for 25 years throughout Austria, Germany and Croatia, as well as a member of International Society of Organbuilders.

Gottlieb Heise was a German organ builder. In 1894, the renowned Alexander Schuke Potsdam Orgelbau company emerged from his Potsdam workshop.

Wolfgang Nußbücker is a German organ builder, cantor and founder of the organ building workshop "Mecklenburger Orgelbau" operating in Plau am See.

Carl Alexander Schuke was a German organ builder and from 1894 to 1933 owner and manager of the Alexander Schuke Potsdam Orgelbau. The company still exists today.

Carl Eduard Gesell was a German organ builder.

Karl Schuke German organ builder (1906–1987)

Karl Ludwig Alexander Schuke was a German organ builder. The son of the organ builder Alexander Schuke, he continued, together with his brother Hans-Joachim Schuke, to run their father's company in Potsdam until 1953, when he founded another organ building company, the Karl Schuke Berliner Orgelbauwerkstatt in West Berlin. They have built organs internationally in Korea, Australia and the U.S.

Gottfried Fritzsche was a German organ builder.

Schuke is a surname, especially of a German family of organ builders.
