Matthieu Blazy (born 1984) is a French-Belgian designer. He is the creative director of Chanel. From 2021 to 2024, he was the creative director of Bottega Veneta. [1] [2]

Early life and education

Blazy grew up in Paris. His father was an art expert and his mother a historian and researcher. [3] He has an older brother who is an airplane pilot and a twin sister who works in Singapore. [4]

During high school, Blazy attended Pangbourne College for a year. [5] He graduated from La Cambre fashion school in Brussels; his graduate collection was about Claudie Haigneré. [6] He did his internships at Balenciaga and John Galliano. [7]

Career

Early career

Raf Simons was a member of the jury of Blazy's graduate collection and hired him on the spot. [3] Blazy brought bolder geometrical patterns to Simons' collections. [8]

In 2011, Blazy became a designer at Maison Margiela, at a time when the design team was anonymous, and where he experimented with advanced collage techniques. [9] In July 2014, Vogue 's Suzy Menkes revealed Blazy after the presentation of Margiela's Artisanal collection he had designed, stating "you can't keep such a talent under wraps." [10] [11] He then designed the Ye encrusted mask worn by Kanye West during the 2013 Yeezus tour. [12]

In November 2014, Blazy joined Phoebe Philo's team as senior designer of Celine working on pre-collections. [7] [13] In August 2016, he was appointed design director of women's ready-to-wear of Calvin Klein under Raf Simons. [14] He left Calvin Klein in 2019. [15]

Bottega Veneta, 2020–2024

In 2020, Blazy became design director of ready-to-wear at Bottega Veneta. In November 2021, he was appointed creative director of Bottega Veneta. [1] Blazy brought an inclusive management style ("egalitarian" according to Anne Collier [8] ), shrank the design team, and got the craftspeople involved in the creative process. [16] He introduced the trompe-l'œil denim leather pants (2021), [17] the intrecciato-woven handbags Kalimero (2022) [18] and Andiamo (2023), [19] and the knitted leather sock-slippers (2023). [20] He was dubbed the "Magician of Milan" by Vanessa Friedman. [16] In September 2023, the brand opened its flagship store in Paris on avenue Montaigne, the first designed by Blazy. [21] As part of his duties, he designed the costumes of the Venice Dance Biennale. [22]

In December 2024, Bottega Veneta announced Blazy's departure from the brand. [2]

In December 2024, Blazy was named creative director of Chanel. [23]

Personal life

Blazy was in a relationship with fellow fashion designer Pieter Mulier until 2023. [24]

Maison Margiela, formerly Maison Martin Margiela, is a French luxury fashion house founded by Belgian designer Martin Margiela and Jenny Meirens in 1988 and headquartered in Paris. The house produces both haute couture-inspired artisanal collections and ready-to-wear collections, with the former influencing the designs of the latter. Product lines include womenswear, menswear, jewellery, footwear, accessories, leather goods, perfumes and household goods. Known for deconstructive and avant-garde designs with unconventional materials, Maison Margiela has traditionally held live shows in unusual settings, for example empty metro stations and street corners. Models' faces are often obscured by fabric or long hair to direct attention to the clothes and design. Margiela resigned as creative designer in 2009. John Galliano was appointed to the role in 2014, and resigned in 2024. The identity of his successor is unknown.

Alessandro Michele is an Italian fashion designer and creative director of Valentino. He grew to international recognition as the creative director of Gucci, the Italian fashion luxury house where he worked from 2002 to 2022. Known for his maximalist designs, Alessandro Michele revived Gucci's popularity, most notably with a Geek-Chic aesthetic. He had been responsible for all of Gucci's collections and global brand image from January 2015 until he stepped down from the role in November 2022.
