The 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 300 injured. The attack was carried out at 5.22 PM after Sheikh Hasina, the leader of opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. The attacks targeted Awami League president Sheikh Hasina. Hasina was injured in the attack.

He is also a leading figure in several organizations, including Rabetatul Waizin Bangladesh, an organization of Islamic speakers in Bangladesh. He is particularly popular with the hard-line speaks against atheists, secularists, anti-islamist and was arrested for leading the movement in this regard. 65 organizations including Bangladesh Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League have started a massive movement across the country demanding banning, arrest and exemplary punishment of him for promoting Islamic fundamentalism. In 2021, his "claimed" second wife has accused him of raping her.

He is the president of Al-Haiatul Ulya Lil-Jamiatil Qawmia Bangladesh and Befaqul Madarisil Arabia Bangladesh, chancellor of Jamia Islamia Darul Uloom Madania, Khatib at Gulshan Central Jama Masjid, editor in chief of Monthly Al-Jamia and Amir of Majlis-e Dawatul Haq Bangladesh. He is the author of Tafsirul Burhanul Quran.

Mahfuzul Haque is a Bangladeshi Deobandi Islamic scholar, politician, educator and public speaker. He is the former vice-president of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, secretary general of Befaqul Madarisil Arabia Bangladesh, chancellor of Jamia Rahmania Arabia, Dhaka and President of regional Qawmi education board Ittefaqul Madarisil Qawmia Muhammadpur. He is also a member of the Standing Committee of Al Haiatul Ulya and was the Secretary-General of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish.

Munshi Atiqur Rahman is a retired Bangladesh Police officer who served as a Assistant Superintendent of Police in the Criminal Investigation Department. He was charged and convicted for attempting to cover up the 2004 Dhaka grenade attack.
