Max Clegg (born 11 April 1997) is a British former motorcycle speedway rider. [1]

Career

Born in Brighouse, Yorkshire, Clegg started racing in grasstrack at the age of seven, moving on to speedway in his teens and becoming team mascot for Sheffield Tigers. [2] He finished second in the British Under-15 500cc Championship in 2011, and made his National League debut in 2012 for Scunthorpe Saints. [3] In 2013, he moved to Dudley Heathens, and was part of the team that won the National League, National League Knock-out Cup, and National Shield titles. [3] He later became the captain of the Cradley team. [4] He was given a Premier League debut by Sheffield Tigers in the last meeting of their 2013 season. [2]

In 2013, he was included in the draft for Elite League reserve places, and was picked by Leicester Lions. [5] He made his Elite League debut on 29 March 2014 against Wolverhampton Wolves, still aged 16. He was part of the Cradley team that won the National League Fours, held on 26 October 2014 at Brandon Stadium. [6]

In December 2014, he signed again for Cradley Heathens for 2015, this time as the team's number one rider and captain. [7]

In 2016, he won both the British Under-19 Championship and the National League Riders' Championship. [8] [9]

In 2022, he re-joined and rode for the Leicester Lions in the SGB Championship 2022. [10] In 2023, he signed for Scunthorpe but was later released. [11]

Clegg retired from speedway before the 2024 season.

The 2014 season of the National League, the third tier of British speedway was contested by nine teams. The Cradley Heathens won the title. The Isle of Wight Islanders were missing from 2012, and the Scunthorpe Stags and Devon Demons have joined the league.

Ellis George Perks is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. In 2019, he became the first ever rider to win all three tiers of the British Speedway leagues in the same season; the Premiership, Championship and National League.

The SGB Championship 2019 was the second division of British speedway. The season ran between March and October 2019 and consisted of 12 participating teams. The defending league champions were the Workington Comets, who completed an excellent 2018 season winning three major trophies.

The National League speedway 2019 now known as the National Development League for the 2019 season was the third tier/division of British speedway. There were several team changes for the 2019 league season with reigning league champions and KO cup winners Eastbourne Eagles, along with the Birmingham Brummies, moving into the SGB Championship. Coventry Bees, who rode their home meetings at Leicester the previous season, did not enter the league, but Leicester Lions entered a team. Cradley Heathens fully entered the league after the previous season National Trophy only commitment, while the Buxton Hitmen decided not compete and only run open meetings (friendlies). It was announced on Tuesday 10 September before the end of the 2019 National Development League season that Stoke Potters' home venue at Loomer Road Stadium had been sold and that the team would not be operating in 2020.
