The McGill University Archives (MUA) performs integrated archival and records management for McGill University. [1] and is housed on the fourth floor of the McLennan Library Building.

Contents

The MUA provides a number of searchable, online databases for researchers. [2] In addition, "A Guide to Archival Resources at McGill University" (1985) [lower-alpha 1] gives a broad overview of archival holdings at McGill University. [3] The McGill University Records Retention Schedule (MURRS) [lower-alpha 2] is also available online, and shows common records created during the daily operations of the University. [4]

The establishment of the McGill University Archives was announced in 1962 by Principal F. Cyril James along with the appointment of McGill's first University Archivist, Mr. Alan Ridge. [5]

Archie is a tool for indexing FTP archives, allowing users to more easily identify specific files. It is considered the first Internet search engine. The original implementation was written in 1990 by Alan Emtage, then a postgraduate student at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Archie was superseded by other, more sophisticated search engines, including Jughead and Veronica, which were search engines for the Gopher protocol. These were in turn superseded by search engines like Yahoo! in 1995 and Google in 1998. Work on Archie ceased in the late 1990s. A legacy Archie server was maintained for historic purposes in Poland at Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling in the University of Warsaw until 2023.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">McIntyre Medical Sciences Building</span>

The McIntyre Medical Sciences Building is part of the McGill University campus in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. A concrete building built in 1965, it is known for its circular shape. The McIntyre Building is the central hub of the McGill University Faculty of Medicine. Its sixteen floors include classrooms, research facilities, laboratories, offices and a cafeteria. Its design, by Canadian architect Janet Leys Shaw Mactavish of the architecture firm Marshall and Merrett, is meant to reduce traffic and circulation between rooms.

The Neuroethics Research Unit was created in 2006, at the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal (IRCM), which is affiliated to the Université de Montréal. The Unit is one of the pioneer units in Canada in this area of research. Neuroethics is a new area of research where bioethics and neuroscience intersect. The focus is on ethical considerations in neuroscience research and the many ethical issues that arise from the transfer of neuroscience to health care.

Richard Margolese, MD, CM FRCS (C), is a Canadian scientist and has been a leader of multiple research studies that have changed the standard treatment for early-stage breast cancer. He is a native of Montreal, Canada.
