History

Jon Clough, Drew Kent and Paul Thornton met whilst studying at Northampton College in 1999. The original three-piece were later joined by Craig Brown to add extra depth on guitars, keyboards and vocals. Medium 21 have released several one-off EPs. These have been on various labels including the independent Outafocus and Fierce Panda. It was Fierce Panda's sister label, Temptation records who signed the band after the success of Plans Are Not Enough EP.

The band have received airplay from BBC Radio 1 including a session for Steve Lamacq and Mark and Lard. They have also featured on London based radio station, XFM.

The debut album is produced by Tim Rowkins, who has worked with the band throughout the release of past material.

Members Jon Clough, Andrew Kent and Paul Thornton have formed another band Pictures Of Leonard with Gaz, formerly of Red Tiger Riot, and Luke, formerly of Kapowski and currently of The Parks Dept and Pets. Craig 'Arge' Brown has been recording (April 2009) his own project An Escape Plan.

Artistic comparisons

Comparisons can be made to American indie lo-fi groups like The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev.[ by whom? ] Also, the alternative retro syth sound of Grandaddy and pop beats and overtones of The Dandy Warhols.[ citation needed ]

The band have never been afraid to stretch the dynamic of the rock four piece. The album demonstrates this well with the use of xylophones, keyboards and other instruments.

Rough Cutt is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California, United States, who released two studio albums on Warner Bros. Records in the mid-1980s. Rough Cutt never achieved the commercial success enjoyed by many other Los Angeles bands of that time but various members went on to success in other groups, including Jake E. Lee with Ozzy Osbourne, Amir Derakh with Orgy, Paul Shortino with Quiet Riot, and Craig Goldy and Claude Schnell with Dio.

The Cockroaches

The Cockroaches were an Australian pub rock band active throughout the 1980s. The band was founded in 1979 by the Field brothers−Paul, John, and Anthony Field −and Tony Henry on drums and Joseph Hallion on saxophone. They were joined in 1981 by Jeff Fatt on keyboards. In 1986 they signed with an independent label, Regular Records, which issued their first three albums, including The Cockroaches, which peaked at No. 9 on the Australian Kent Music Report Albums Chart; it sold 70,000 copies and was certified platinum by their label. The album spawned the single "She's the One", which became the band's biggest hit when it peaked at No. 7 on the Kent Music Report Singles Chart in April 1987. In 1988, The Daily Telegraph described The Cockroaches, who played over 300 gigs a year, as the "Hardest Working Rock'n'Roll Band" in the country.

Panda (band)

Panda was a Mexican rock band formed in Monterrey, Nuevo León in 1996 as part of the musical movement known as Avanzada Regia. The last line-up consisted in singer José Madero, drummer Jorge Vásquez, lead guitarist Arturo Arredondo and bassist Ricardo Treviño.

Dawn of the Replicants are a Scottish indie rock quintet from Galashiels. Four of the 1997 line-up had previously worked together on the short-lived Scottish music magazine, Sun Zoom Spark.

Electric Pandas were an Australian pop rock band, fronted by vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Lin Buckfield, which formed in Sydney in 1983. Fellow founders were Warren Slater on bass guitar, Mark Stinson on drums and Tim Walter on guitar. Their first release was the single "Big Girls" in 1984 on Regular Records, which peaked into the Top 10 on the Sydney charts. It was followed up by an EP, Let's Gamble. Electric Pandas' only album Point Blank was released in September 1985, which peaked at No. 22 on the Australian Kent Music Report Albums Chart.
