Meena Kamal (born 5 September 1968) is an Indian-American contemporary visual artist, she is known for her work in abstract landscape expressionism. [1]
She was born on 5 September 1968 in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India. She received a BA Honours in History from Miranda House, Delhi University (1988), an LLB from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut (1999), then an LLM in International Law from Thomas Jefferson School of Law, San Diego (2010), and an MFA in Painting from Academy of Art University, San Francisco In 2014. Her father Kunwar Mahmood Ali Khan was former Governor of Madhya Pradesh (1990–1993). Her brother, Hamid Ali Rao, is a retired Indian Foreign Service officer who served as India’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia (2011–2015).[ citation needed ]
Artistic career
Kamal works primarily in oil on canvas, oil on linen, and mixed media, including oil on wood. She describes her paintings as “philosophical reflections of changing social, political and economic landscapes.” Her work incorporates both organic and geometric forms. She cites inspiration from aerial photography during her travels, and acknowledges the influence of Richard Diebenkorn, Jackson Pollock, and Van Gogh. [1] [3] Gallery owner James Bacchi described her work in 2016 as having qualities that lead viewers “into a meditative state.” She previously maintained studios in San Francisco and Mumbai, and currently works from Dubai and San Francisco. In January 2023, Meena Kamal co-founded and opened MRK Contemporary Art Gallery with her son Rayad Kamal Ayub in Dubai's Mazaya Centre on Sheikh Zayed Road. [5]
