Meerwala

Last updated

The name Meerwala refers to both a mouza and a small village of Jatoi, a rural tehsil in the Muzaffargarh District of Punjab, Pakistan. The village ( 29°27′11″N70°46′48″E / 29.453°N 70.780°E / 29.453; 70.780 ) is 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) north of the mouza ( 29°22′26″N70°47′35″E / 29.374°N 70.793°E / 29.374; 70.793 ). Meerwala achieved global infamy in 2002 as the village whose tribal elders ordered the gang rape of Mukhtar Mai.

In Bangladesh, Pakistan and parts of India a mouza or mauza is a type of administrative district, corresponding to a specific land area within which there may be one or more settlements. Before the 20th century, the term referred to a revenue collection unit in a pargana or revenue district. As populations increased and villages became more common and developed, the concept of the mouza declined in importance. Today it has become mostly synonymous with the gram or village. Most [[cenhharugràm and voter lists, for example, now use the names of villages rather than mouzas.

Jatoi is a tehsil of Muzaffargarh District in the Punjab. Its capital is Jatoi. It is located in the southern part of the Punjab province and is a very historic city. The estimated population is 714,576. Tehsil Jatoi is known for the Sakina-Tu-Sughra Mosque, which is constructed in Turkish style.

A tehsil is an administrative division in some countries of South Asia. It is an area of land with a city or town that serves as its administrative centre, with possible additional towns, and usually a number of villages. The terms in India have replaced earlier geographical terms, such as pargana, pergunnah and thannah, used under Delhi Sultanate and the British Raj.
