The Meetjesland is a historical region in the north-west of the province East Flanders in Belgium.

Etymology

There are many legends surrounding the origin of the name. The most known is the one of Emperor Charles V (Charles V) who was known for his sexual appetite. The story goes that when he traveled through the region people hid their daughters and their attractive young women, making emperor Charles think this region was full of old women (meetjes).

Geography

Due to its historical nature, "Meetjesland" is not a fixed region as such. Even so, it is widely accepted to comprise the following municipalities:

Eeklo is considered to be the capital of "Meetjesland".

The official holiday of "Meetjesland" is celebrated on June 21.

Fort Pitt, Kent Napoleonic fort in Chatham, Kent

Fort Pitt is a Napoleonic era fort on the high ground of the boundary between Chatham and Rochester, Kent. A fort on the site was proposed in the 1790s, and finally built between 1805 and 1819. Not finally used as a fort, it became a hospital and is now a girls' grammar school.

Kondaveedu Fort

Kondaveedu Fort is a historically significant ancient hill fortress located in Kondaveedu, a village in the Chilakaluripet constituency of Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, India. The site is located 16 miles west of the city of Guntur. Apart from this main fort, there are two other forts nearby. Efforts are in progress to classify Kondaveedu Fort as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Stoomcentrum Maldegem

Stoomcentrum Maldegem (SCM), literally Maldegem Steam Centre, is a heritage railway located at Maldegem in northern Belgium. It is located at the former NMBS station. Standard gauge trains run on the line to Eeklo, where the SCM has its own station.
