Mehmet Şandır (born in 1947, in Bayırbucak, Syria) is a Turkish politician. He is a former MP of the Turkish Nationalist Movement Party, [1] and is currently an Honorary President of the Syrian Turkmen Assembly. [2]

Bayırbucak

Bayirbucak is a region in northwestern of Syria that has a long border with Turkey. There is a considerable Syrian Turkmen presence in the area and the region has both strong cultural and historical ties with Turkey and Turks in Turkey.

Early life and career

Şandır was born in 1947 in Bayırbucak, Syria, to Hasan and Atika Şandır. He graduated from Istanbul University in the Faculty of Forestry. Şandır served as the Turkish Minister of Forest and Water Management and then the Minister of Customs and Trade. [3]

Syrian Turkmen Assembly organization

Syrian Turkmen Brigades, also called the United Turkmen Army, are an informal armed opposition structure composed of Syrian Turkmen and Turks that form the military wing of the Syrian Turkmen Assembly, primarily fighting against the Syrian Armed Forces, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and the Syrian Democratic Forces. They are aligned with the Syrian opposition and are heavily supported by Turkey, who provides funding and military training along with artillery and aerial support. Turkmen Mountain mountain in Syria

Turkmen Mountain is a mountain range in the north of Latakia region of Syria, in the area called Bayırbucak locally in Turkish, neighboring the Turkish border. The mountain range runs along the eastern length of Latakia Governorate. The area is mostly inhabited by Syrian Turkmen people and has seen military activity by the Syrian Army and Russian air strikes in late 2015. Abdurrahman Mustafa Turkish politician

Abdurrahman Mustafa is the incumbent president of the Syrian Turkmen Assembly, the umbrella organization of the Turkmen political movements in Syria, and the political leader of the Turkmen national movement of Syria. On 6 May 2018, he was elected as the head of the Syrian National Coalition.

The Syrian Turkmen Movement was the first opposition movement of Syrian Turkmens. Founded by Ali Öztürkmen, who left Syria for Turkey soon after the Syrian uprising in 2011, it strived to politicize Syrian Turkmens to take to the streets as "Turkmen". In February 2012, it joined forces with the newly founded Syrian Turkmen Group to form the larger Syria Turkmen Bloc.

The Syrian Turkmen Group was an early opposition movement of Syrian Turkmens. Founded in 2011 by prominent Syrian Turkmens and 180 Syrian Turkmen in Turkey, it was led by Bekir Atacan. In late 2011, it joined forces with the preexisting Syrian Turkmen Movement to form the larger Syria Turkmen Bloc, which was officially established in February 2012.

Qebbet al-Turkmen Village in Aleppo, Syria

Qebbet al-Turkmen or Gubut Türkmen, also known as Gubba is a village in northern Aleppo Governorate, northwestern Syria. Administratively belonging to Nahiya Ghandoura in Jarabulus District, the village has a population of 1,186 as per the 2004 census. It is located midway between Çobanbey (al-Rai) and Jarabulus, at the western banks of Sajur River, less than a kilometer southwest of the Sajur Dam. Nearby localities include Lilawa to the north and Gavur Elli (Ghandoura) to the southeast.

Turkman Bareh Village in Aleppo, Syria

Turkman Bareh, alternatively spelled Barih, is a village in northern Aleppo Governorate, northwestern Syria. About 40 kilometres (25 mi) northeast of the city of Aleppo and about 13 km (8.1 mi) south of Syria's border with Turkey, it is administratively part of Nahiya Akhtarin of Azaz District. Nearby localities include Dabiq 5 km (3.1 mi) to the west and Akhtarin 4 km (2.5 mi) to the south. In the 2004 census, Turkman Bareh had a population of 1,537 with a dominative Syrian Turkmen majority.{Citation needed}
