The Memorial Community Church is a Baptist church in Plaistow, Newham, east London. Neo-Byzantine in style, it is grade II listed. [1]

History

The church was originally founded in 1871 as the Barking Road Tabernacle - the preceding building is still extant on Barking Road closer to Canning Town. This was in continuing debt until Robert Rowntree Clifford took over in 1897, reviving and transforming the church membership and clearing all the debts by 1900. Growth led to the formation of West Ham Central Mission in 1904. This ran alongside the church until its present building opened in 1922. [1] [2] Designed by William Hayne, its construction had taken 15 months, costing about £60,000. It was constructed in the Byzantine style with a domed auditorium and two towers, [3] and was dedicated to men from the local community and the congregation who had died in World War I. In 1924 the church received the gift of a new organ from Dame Clara Butt. The organ is of particular interest having been built by R. Spurden-Rutt as their first instrument using electric action. The bells in the East tower were cast by Gillett & Johnston. [4] with the names of 169 local men lost in the First World War cast into them. One bears the name of Prince Maurice of Battenberg, the only member of the British royal family killed in action in the "Great" War, and one is dedicated to the Unknown Warrior. The bells were dedicated in 1926 at a service including a performance by the baritone Kennerley Rumford.

In the New Year Honours of 1938, Robert Rowntree Clifford's wife, Hettie, received the OBE for her efforts as superintendent of the women's work of the Mission. [5]

In 1978, a new trust deed changed the name of the Mission to Memorial Baptist Church Plaistow. [2] The Memorial Community Church was formed in 2006 when the congregation of St Andrew's Church, Plaistow merged into the congregation of Memorial Baptist Church to form one group. [6]

It initially worshipped in the National School on Barking Road until the permanent church opened in 1867, with a parish formed for it the following year by parts of St Mary's and All Saints. Its advowson was initially vested in the bishop, but transferred to the Lord Chancellor in 1886 to allow the benefice of Holy Trinity to be supplemented from revenues from All Hallows Church, London Wall.

St Andrew's Church was a Church of England church on Barking Road in Plaistow, east London. It began as a small mission built in 1860 on Whitwell Road by St Mary's Church, Plaistow. A permanent church designed by James Brooks opened in 1870 on a site just south of the northern outfall sewer embankment and a separate parish assigned to it the following year. A large central crossing tower with a pyramidal spire was planned but only completed as far as the ridge of the nave roof.

St Cedd's Church was a Church of England church between Newham Way, and Chadwin Road, in Canning Town, east London, dedicated to Cedd, evangelist to Essex, in whose ceremonial county the church falls. Opened as a brick hall in 1903-1904 as a mission of St Andrew's Church, Plaistow, it had a mission district assigned using parts of the parishes of St Andrew's and St Luke's in 1905. That mission district was turned into a separate parish in 1936, for which a new redbrick church was completed in 1939. Part of the former parish of Holy Trinity Church was assigned to St Cedd's in 1961, though the latter is no longer an Anglican church. Fire damaged in 1995, it was restored and re-opened in 2007 to house the London Ghana Seventh-day Adventist congregation

St Katherine's Church, Plaistow was a Church of England church on Chapman Road in Plaistow, Newham. It opened in 1891 as a mission church of St Mary's Church, Plaistow, using a building that had earlier been used to house the infant department of that church's day schools. In 1894 a permanent church was completed. In 1965 it was demolished for redevelopment.
