Men Up is a Welsh television film broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, about the first ever clinical trials for the drug viagra, which took place in Swansea in 1994. Russell T Davies is amongst the executive producers. The cast includes Aneurin Barnard, Alexandra Roach, Phaldut Sharma, Iwan Rheon, Steffan Rhodri and Joanna Page. It aired on 29 December 2023.

Synopsis

In Morriston Hospital in Swansea in 1994, a group of middle-aged Welsh men stepped into the unknown by taking part in the world's first medical trials for the drug that became Viagra.

Production

The programme was written by Matthew Barry. Executive producers were Nicola Shindler and Davina Earl for Quay Street Productions, Rachel Evans for Boom, Matthew Barry, Russell T Davies and Rebecca Ferguson for the BBC. [1] Men Up was directed by Ashley Way and produced by Karen Lewis. [2]

Casting

In 2023 the cast was revealed to include Phaldut Sharma, Iwan Rheon, Mark Lewis Jones, Steffan Rhodri, Alexandra Roach and Joanna Page. [3] Dyfan Dwyfor and Aneurin Barnard also appeared. [4]

Filming

Filming took place in Swansea in early 2023. [5] Filming had wrapped before the end of May 2023. [6]

Broadcast and reception

The programme was shown in the UK on BBC One and BBC iPlayer during the 2023 festive period. [7]

Writing for The Guardian , Lucy Mangan described the programme as "a masterpiece" and awarded it five stars out of five. [8]

Accolades

The series was nominated for Best Single Drama at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards in March 2024. [9]

He played Reg Cattermole in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and as the voice of Drippy in Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. He has been called "Wales' most prolific actor". On stage, he has played Banquo alongside Ralph Fiennes in Simon Godwin's production of Macbeth.

Cara Fi is a Welsh romantic comedy-drama series that first broadcast in November 2014 on S4C, and was later made available on the BBC iPlayer. The eight-part series was created by Sarah Dollard. In 2015 the show was nominated for the BAFTA Cymru awards for costume design and for original music.

<i>Doctor Who</i> (series 14) 2024 series of Doctor Who

The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere in May 2024. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season 1" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
