Mercedeh Khajavikhan

Mercedeh Khajavikhan is a laser scientist and topological photonics researcher. [1] [2] Originally from Iran, she works in the US as a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Southern California.

Education and career

Khajavikhan was born in Iran, [3] and received a bachelor's degree in 2000 and a master's degree in 2003 in electrical engineering from the Amirkabir University of Technology in Tehran. She continued her graduate study in electrical engineering at the University of Minnesota in the US, receiving her Ph.D. in 2009. [4]

After postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Diego, she became an assistant professor in the University of Central Florida College of Optics & Photonics in 2012. After earning tenure there in 2018, she moved in 2019 to her present position at the University of Southern California, where she also holds a joint appointment in the Physics and Astronomy Department. [4]

Recognition

Khajavikhan was named as a Fellow of Optica in 2021, "for seminal contributions in the fields of non-Hermitian and topological photonics by conceiving and developing new types of optoelectronic technologies". [5] She was named as a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) in 2024, after a nomination from the APS Division of Laser Science, "for important contributions in physical optics and device physics, including PT-based lasers, sensors, gyroscopes, and nanolasers". [6]

Since his election to the 2002 term as president of the Optical Society, formerly the Optical Society of America, Johnson has the distinction of being the first and only African-American president to date. Johnson's research interests include the ultrafast photophysics and nonlinear optical properties of bulk, nanostructured, and quantum well semiconductor structures, ultrashort pulse propagation in fibers and high-speed lightwave systems. His research has helped to better understand processes that occur in ultrafast time frames of 1 quadrillionth of a second. Ultrashort pulses of light have been used to address technical and logistical challenges in medicine, telecommunications, homeland security, and have many other applications that enhance contemporary life.

Gisele Bennett was a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Director of the GTRI Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). She also founded the Logistics and Maintenance Applied Research Center (LandMARC) at GTRI.

Manijeh Razeghi is an Iranian-American scientist in the fields of semiconductors and optoelectronic devices. She is a pioneer in modern epitaxial techniques for semiconductors such as low pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), vapor phase epitaxy (VPE), molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), GasMBE, and MOMBE. These techniques have enabled the development of semiconductor devices and quantum structures with higher composition consistency and reliability, leading to major advancement in InP and GaAs based quantum photonics and electronic devices, which were at the core of the late 20th century optical fiber telecommunications and early information technology.

Jelena Vučković is a Serbian-born American professor and a courtesy faculty member in the Department of Applied Physics at Stanford University. She served as Fortinet Founders Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University from August 2021 through June 2023. Vučković leads the Nanoscale and Quantum Photonics (NQP) Lab, and is a faculty member of the Ginzton Lab, PULSE Institute, SIMES Institute, and Bio-X at Stanford. Carmen S. Menoni is an Argentine-American physicist who is the University Distinguished Professor at Colorado State University. Her research considers oxide materials for interference coatings and spectrometry imaging. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, American Physical Society, Optica, and SPIE. Menoni served as the President of the IEEE Photonics Society from 2020 to 2021.

Andrea Blanco-Redondo is a Spanish photonics engineer and physicist who works at the University of Central Florida as Florida Photonics Center of Excellence (FPCE) Endowed Professor in the College of Optics and Photonics (CREOL). She is known for her discovery of optical quartic solitons; her research interests also include topological photonics, quantum optics, nanophotonics, photonic crystals, and slow light.
