Meredith Davis (born 1948, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) [1] is an educator, writer and graphic designer. Her work centers for advocating for a comprehensive, critical and challenging design education. [2]
Davis graduated from The Pennsylvania State University in 1970, receiving her BS in art education and her MEd in 1974. She began her career teaching middle-school art. In 1975, she received her MFA in design from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. While at Cranbrook, she received a grant to develop the Michigan curriculum to introduce students to communication, objects and environments through design thinking. [2] [1] The curriculum research culminated in authoring Problem Solving in the Man-made Environment in 1974.
After graduating, Davis became the curator of education at the Hunter Museum of Art in Chattanooga, Tennessee from 1975 to 1976. In 1976 she began teaching full-time at Virginia Commonwealth University. [2] [1] She founded her firm Communication Design in 1979. There, she oversaw large-scale projects for Fortune 500 clients including Best Products, the United Nations, and Twentieth Century Fund. [1]
In 1989, Davis quit her practice and teaching at VCU to move to North Carolina where she focused on research and teaching as a professor at North Carolina State University (NCSU). She quickly was promoted that year to head the new Graphic Design department and in 1997 became director of the Graduate Program. Her 1999 book Design as a Catalyst for Learning received a CHOICE Award from the Association of College and Research Libraries. [3] In 2005, she became the director of the Ph.D program in Design at NCSU, the second such program in the United States. [1]
She is a former president of the American Center for Design and founding president of the Graphic Design Education Association. [4]

Davis' interest in graduate education and graphic design research were the foundation for her belief that research was what marked graphic design as a "profession" rather than a "trade." [1] Design research also identifies how design practice and knowledge is shifting from object-based applications to systems-based applications. These are systems that "evolve and behave organically; transfer control from designers to users or participants; emphasize the importance of community; acknowledge media convergence; and require work by interdisciplinary teams to address the complexity of contemporary problems." [5] For graphic design to succeed as a profession, she is concerned with school accreditation and assessment and began collaborating with AIGA and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) to design national standards that set minimum thresholds for program performance while allowing innovation at institutions. Muriel Cooper was a pioneering book designer, digital designer, researcher, and educator. She was the first design director of the MIT Press, instilling a Bauhaus-influenced design style into its many publications. She moved on to become founder of MIT's Visible Language Workshop, and later became a co-founder of the MIT Media Lab. In 2007, a New York Times article called her "the design heroine you've probably never heard of".
The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) is a professional organization for design. Its members practice all forms of communication design, including graphic design, typography, interaction design, user experience, branding and identity. The organization's aim is to be the standard bearer for professional ethics and practices for the design profession. There are currently over 25,000 members and 72 chapters, and more than 200 student groups around the United States. In 2005, AIGA changed its name to “AIGA, the professional association for design,” dropping the "American Institute of Graphic Arts" to welcome all design disciplines. AIGA aims to further design disciplines as professions, as well as cultural assets. As a whole, AIGA offers opportunities in exchange for creative new ideas, scholarly research, critical analysis, and education advancement.

Previously she was the Senior Curator of Contemporary Design at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City and was named Curator Emerita after 30 years of service. She is the founding director of the Graphic Design M.F.A. degree program at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where she also serves as director of the Center for Design Thinking. She has written numerous books on graphic design for a variety of audiences. She has contributed to several publications, including Print, Eye, I.D., Metropolis, and The New York Times.
Paul Scott Makela was a graphic designer, multimedia designer and type designer. Among other work, he was especially noted for the design of Dead History, a postmodern typeface that combined features of a rounded sans serif typeface and a crisp neo-classical serif typeface. With the emergence of the personal computer in the mid-1980s, Makela was among the first to explore digital programs such as Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. As a result, he created an idiosyncratic, original and highly controversial design aesthetic. In particular, his disregard for clean, modernist, problem-solving design agendas—synonymous with contemporary corporate graphic design—caused much debate among powerful, old-guard designers such as Massimo Vignelli, Paul Rand, and Henry Wolf.
Lorraine Wild is a Canadian-born American graphic designer, writer, art historian, and teacher. She is an AIGA Medalist and principal of Green Dragon Office, a design firm that focuses on collaborative work with artists, architects, curators, editors and publishers. Wild is based in Los Angeles, California.
