Meridian Dan (born Daniel Lawrence London) [1] is a grime MC from Tottenham, North London. [2] He is best known for his 2014 single "German Whip", and is a former member of seminal grime crews Meridian and Bloodline.

Background

Lawrence, who is of Guyanese descent, [3] first started MCing at age 10, having had music around him throughout his childhood and being inspired by hip-hop and reggae. [4] Jme and Big H, who both feature on "German Whip", were both childhood friends. [4]

Meridian Dan was a peripheral member of Meridian Crew along with President T, Skepta, Jme, Big H, Bossman Birdie and Paper Pabs in the early noughties. During his time in the group he made regular appearances on the crew's show on pirate radio station Heat FM show and later on Déjà Vu FM. [4] He featured on Skepta's "Private Caller" single in 2005. [5] In 2005, Meridian Dan took a hiatus from music after Meridian Crew disbanded - with other crew members going on to form Boy Better Know and Bloodline Family - to pursue other interests and careers. During this time, he worked as a boxer, [5] a plasterer, an electrician, a steel erector, and a welder. [6] Having formerly been a steward at the club, he is a supporter of Tottenham Hotspur. [7] In a 2014 interview, Meridian Dan said that his hiatus was because he wasn't getting paid for his music and had outside stresses to attend to. [4]

He returned to making music in 2010 recording songs and making pirate radio appearances with other members of Bloodline Family. [5] In 2013 he recorded German Whip featuring Big H of Bloodline and Jme of Boy Better Know, after the song achieved underground success Meridian Dan was signed to PMR who gave the song a commercial release in 2014. German Whip charted at #13 on the UK Singles Chart. [8] This led the London Evening Standard to quip that his jump to stardom must have been "one of the slowest breakthroughs in music". [9]

Music

In August 2014, the song "One Two Drinks" was announced as the next single from his forthcoming debut album I Am London which is set to be released on PMR. In mid 2015, he also released single "The Bits" which was also released under PMR. [10] [11]

In September 2014, Meridian Dan received three nominations for awards in 'Mobo Best Grime', 'Best Song' and 'Best Newcomer'. [12]

In the past 14 years he has collaborated with the likes of Skepta, T.I., Meek Mill, Young Adz and many others. In 2009, he released his debut album, I Am Chipmunk, featuring four songs which peaked in the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart, including the chart-topping "Oopsy Daisy". In 2011, Chipmunk released his follow-up album, the American hip hop-influenced Transition. It included the single "Champion" featuring Chris Brown, which peaked at #2 on the UK Singles Chart.

With Boy Better Know, Skepta clashed with fellow MC Devilman for the video release Lord of the Mics 2, in what is remembered as one of the biggest clashes in grime history.

Skepta released his debut album Greatest Hits on 17 September 2007. It was released on the Boy Better Know label. Skepta self-released the first single "Rolex Sweep" in September 2008, which reached number 89 on the UK Singles Chart. He released the album Microphone Champion on 1 June 2009. The single "Too Many Man", with JME, Wiley, Frisco and Shorty, charted at number 79.

So Solid Crew are a British UK garage and hip hop collective originating from Battersea, London, which achieved wide success in the early 2000s. The group consisted of many members, the most notable being Asher D, Lisa Maffia, Harvey and Romeo. So Solid have been credited for being pioneers in the UK music scene. By turning UK garage from a dancey-genre to one that was darker and more MC-oriented, and gaining mainstream success, they inspired London youth to experiment with their own darker sounds, leading to what would become known as grime music.

The song entered the UK Singles Chart on 20 May 2014 at number 13, which remains its highest charting position.

The Heavytrackerz are a group of record producers, songwriters and instrumentalists from Walthamstow, East London. The group currently consists of Lord Teedot, G.Tank and RasEye. HeavyTrackerz are often recognized as producers of singles for grime artists and UK rappers. Their songs are recognizable by a voice stating "trackerz" in time with the instrumental introduction. An example is clearly heard in the 2015 Dizzee Rascal single "Nutcrackerz".

Tre Mission is a Canadian musician, known as one of the first North American artists to be associated with the predominantly United Kingdom-based grime genre. Tre Mission is a member of the Tizzy Gang grime crew alongside London based MCs Merky ACE and Cadell.

<i>Konnichiwa</i> (Skepta album) 2016 studio album by Skepta

Konnichiwa is the fourth studio album by British rapper Skepta. The title is the greeting "hello" in the Japanese language. After numerous delays, it was released on 6 May 2016 by Boy Better Know. Konnichiwa features guest appearances from Jme, Boy Better Know, D Double E, Novelist, Wiley, Chip, Pharrell Williams, ASAP Nast and Young Lord. Konnichiwa was executively produced by Skepta himself, who produced all but three songs on the album. Pharrell also worked on production with Skepta on the album.

Anthony George Harris, better known by his stage name President T, is a British grime artist from North London. President T was born in Birmingham, but moved to Tottenham, North London when he was 3 years old. He is known for his distinct style of delivery, offbeat rhyming patterns, and flow.

Deshane Cornwall, known professionally as Frisco, is a British grime MC, songwriter and record producer who is part of the Boy Better Know (BBK) music label which includes Jme, Skepta, Jammer, among others. He has released three solo albums and a series of mixtapes, guested on tracks by his label mates and established a successful monthly grime event in East London, contributing to the popularity of grime within the UK music scene.
