Metro Transit Assassins, also known by the initialism MTA or as Melting Toys Away and Must Take All, [1] is a graffiti street artist collective based in Los Angeles, most famous for its half-mile graffiti "MTA" tag along the concrete walls of the Los Angeles River. [2]
MTA was founded in the late 80s by Skate (1969-1993), [3] who was already a founding member of another crew called California Bomb Squad (CBS). [4] [5] Other MTA original members were Skate's girlfriend Blosm, AZ, and Anger. [6]
Over the years, many writers have joined the crew, including Swan, Demon, Gasoline (aka Gas aka Gaso), Sufer, Smear, K9er, Apear, Toro, Nomas, Ohjae, Ralos, Suem, Resek, Rakl, Rums, Wyde, Rose, Hapho, Zoner, Blisk, Abek, Fetish (aka Fem).
In June 2010, the L.A. city attorney filed a civil lawsuit against 11 alleged members or alleged former members of the MTA crew. [7] The suit had asked for $5,000,000 in restitution from the 11 defendants and was seeking a first-of-its-kind injunction against a graffiti crew, an injunction modeled on those made for violent street gangs. [8]
On June 20, 2012, the civil case against 11 alleged members of the MTA crew named in the suit was settled [7] with the 11 defendants no longer required to pay the city of Los Angeles millions of dollars for graffiti cleanup. The city agreed not to enforce the injunction against 8 of the defendants (Smear being one of those 8 defendants) as long as they refrain from any "graffiti vandalism" and complete certain requirements. Furthermore, the cases would be totally dismissed when the defendants pay outstanding fines, perform 100 hours of graffiti removal and five years pass without a graffiti conviction. Since Smear had paid all outstanding fines and 5 years since 2007 had passed without a graffiti conviction and he had finished the 100 hours of community service, the case against Smear was dismissed June 20, 2012. [7]
The world famous MTA tag holds the Guinness World record for the largest graffiti tag in history measuring 57 feet high and 1,700 feet long, the tag took 300 gallons of white paint and 100 gallons of black paint. [9] The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was brought in to buff it in late 2009, spending $3.7 million to buff the tag. [10] [11]

They were charged with conspiring to commit fraud and soliciting loans they had no intention of repaying. The "Sleepy Lagoon murder" was the name that Los Angeles newspapers used to describe the death of José Gallardo Díaz, who was discovered unconscious and dying near a reservoir with two stab wounds and a broken finger in Commerce, California, United States, on the morning of August 2, 1942. Earlier, Díaz was seen at a party for Eleanor Delgadillo Coronado where he left afterwards with two friends, Luis "Cito" Vargas and Andrew Torres. He was then confronted by a group of young men from the 38th Street neighborhood, who came to the party seeking revenge for an earlier beating of some of their friends.

City attorney's office, a lawsuit which largely because of its First Amendment implications has garnered the attention of international media, including the Huffington Post, L.A. Playboys 13 Gang, also known by the acronym PBS13, is a predominantly Mexican-American street gang founded in the Los Angeles County, California and extends to areas in South Central Los Angeles and Orange County, California. The gang also goes by the Spanish term "Conejo" which means "rabbit" or Rabbit gang to identify itself. They align themselves with the prison gang known as La EME or the Mexican Mafia, Because of their affiliation with La EME, while in prison, they set aside their rivalry with other Southern California gang members known as Sureños.
The 2011–2012 Los Angeles arson attacks were a series of fires started on December 29, 2011, in Los Angeles, California. It was the worst case of arson reported in the area since the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Harry Burkhart, then 24, who was wanted in Germany on suspicion of burning down his home, was charged in Los Angeles in January 2012 with 28 counts of arson of property and nine counts of arson of an inhabited structure. Prosecutors said that Burkhart was "motivated by rage against Americans" and sought to terrorize as many people as possible when he torched dozens of cars, homes and garages late at night, when most residents were sleeping, to inflict maximum fear and damage.
In 2010, due to escalating gang activity and high crime rates in Oakland, California, the Oakland city attorney's office under John Russo sought gang injunctions in Oakland against multiple gangs, with the first coming into effect in May of that year. A second injunction was sought from 2010 to 2012, with a preliminary injunction approved in June 2011 and the full injunction approved in February 2012. A gang injunction is a court-issued restraining order that prohibits named gang members from participating in a variety of specified activities. The injunctions were controversial, with opponents citing concerns about their high costs and the possibility of civil rights violations, while proponents felt that the city had not adequately supported the injunctions. In 2015, city attorney Barbara Parker dismissed both injunctions.
