Miccosukee Casino & Resort is a 9-story resort and casino located in the western outskirts of Miami, Florida on the edge of the Everglades. [1] It has a colored statue of a young Miccosukee boy outside the front entrance. [2] [3] It has been quoted to be "one of the most unusual resort destinations in Florida" due to the contrast between the Native American village surroundings and the casino. [4] Established in 1999 at a reported cost of $45 million, it is operated by about 400 members of the Miccosukee Tribe. [5] [6] [7] In 2009, it was estimated that the Miccosukee Resort generated revenue of around $75 million a year. [8]

Facilities

The resort boasts 256 guest rooms and 56 suites, with guest facilities including a casino, dining, a conference center, and banquet facilities. Various events, including Boxing and MMA, are hosted at Miccosukee Casino. [9] The casino includes slot machines and a poker section where it regularly hosts poker tournaments. [10] [11] [12]

The Miccosukee Golf and Country Club is also located nearby. [13] On September 29, 2011, Miccosukee Resort, along with Romance 106.7FM, Budweiser, 411 pain and Walgreens, organized a Latin music concert in Miami named "Una Copa con Romance", attended by some 1500 people and artists such as Charlie Zaa. The Everglades is a natural region of flooded grasslands in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Florida, comprising the southern half of a large drainage basin within the Neotropical realm. The system begins near Orlando with the Kissimmee River, which discharges into the vast but shallow Lake Okeechobee. Water leaving the lake in the wet season forms a slow-moving river 60 miles (97 km) wide and over 100 miles (160 km) long, flowing southward across a limestone shelf to Florida Bay at the southern end of the state. The casinos have more than 250 gaming tables for blackjack, craps, roulette, and poker, and have more than 5,500 slot machines. The casinos also have several restaurants, among them a Hard Rock Cafe. It has been developed since changes in state and federal laws in the late 20th century enabled Native American gaming on the sovereign reservations of federally recognized tribes.

The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians is a federally recognized Native American tribe in the U.S. state of Florida. Together with the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma and the Seminole Tribe of Florida, it is one of three federally recognized Seminole entities.

The Mikasuki, Hitchiti-Mikasuki, or Hitchiti language is a language or a pair of dialects or closely related languages that belong to the Muskogean languages family. As of 2014, Mikasuki was spoken by around 290 people in southern Florida. Along with the Cow Creek Seminole dialect of Muscogee, it is also known as Seminole. It is spoken by members of the Miccosukee tribe and of the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The extinct Hitchiti was a mutually intelligible dialect of or the ancestor of Mikasuki.

The Seminole Tribe of Florida is a federally recognized Seminole tribe based in the U.S. state of Florida. Together with the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma and the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, it is one of three federally recognized Seminole entities. It received that status in 1957. Today, it has six Indian reservations in Florida.

The indigenous people of the Everglades region arrived in the Florida peninsula of what is now the United States approximately 14,000 to 15,000 years ago, probably following large game. The Paleo-Indians found an arid landscape that supported plants and animals adapted to prairie and xeric scrub conditions. Large animals became extinct in Florida around 11,000 years ago.

The company 1-800-411-PAIN Referral Service was an American medical and lawyer referral service until it closed in December 2018. The firm, based in Davie, Florida, was established in 1995 by Dr. Robert Lewin. The organization is an attorney-referral system for victims of motor vehicle accidents, slip and falls, work related injuries and recreational accidents. The Florida Trend cites it as one of Florida's larger for-profit lawyer referral services, and Biotech Week cites the company as one of America's "leading treatment and lawyer referral resources for people injured in auto accidents."

William Buffalo Tiger was a political leader of the Miccosukee Nation based in the Everglades area of Florida. He served as the first elected tribal chairman from 1962 to 1985, and before that was head of the General Council from 1957 and a chief. His activism led to political organization of the Miccosukee and their gaining federal recognition in 1962 as an independent Native American tribe. They wrote a constitution to govern their people.
