Michael Anthony Brown (born August 4, 1978) is an American television producer, documentary filmmaker, and progressive political activist. He is the director of Haunted State a documentary series on Amazon Amazon Prime Video and the documentary films Roller Life (2016), Haunted State: Whispers From History Past (2014) and Haunted State: Theatre of Shadows (2017). Early life

Brown attended Brookfield Central High School in Brookfield, Wisconsin (class of 1996). He went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's film program, but quickly dropped out due to financial reasons.[ citation needed ] After leaving college, he worked at WKTI, his favorite childhood radio station, at times filling in to produce the Reitman and Mueller morning show.[ citation needed ]

TV Shows

Haunted State, is an eight-part documentary series that premiered on Amazon Prime Video on March 19, 2019. Brown is the director, executive producer, show runner and star of the show. Set in Wisconsin, the first season focuses on the loss of family members and the ability to communicate with them after they die. Each episode centers on a location in Wisconsin that has paranormal claims and rich history surrounding those claims. [2]

Films

Brown's first film was Haunted State: Whispers From History Past , a 2014 documentary about four locations in Wisconsin with popular paranormal claims. Although Brown never believed in ghosts, after the events that took place in the film, he changed his mind.[ citation needed ] [3] [4]

Released in 2016, Roller Life explored the challenges female athletes face playing flat track roller derby. The film featured the Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based Brewcity Bruisers flat track roller derby league. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] Roller Life (2016) was a selection at the 2017 Milwaukee Film Festival. Brown added to the Haunted State documentary series with Haunted State: Theatre Of Shadows in October 2017. The film featured four theatres in Wisconsin and explored the paranormal claims of each. [12] [13] [14] [15]

Political activism

Brown founded United Wisconsin PAC and is a former member of its board of directors. United Wisconsin was the non-partisan political action committee that forced the recall election of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker in 2011. [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] [22]

2011 Wisconsin protests

The 2011 Wisconsin protests were a series of demonstrations in the state of Wisconsin in the United States beginning in February involving at its zenith as many as 100,000 protesters opposing the 2011 Wisconsin Act 10, also called the "Wisconsin Budget Repair bill." The protests centered on the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison, with satellite protests also occurring at other municipalities throughout the state. Demonstrations took place at various college campuses, including the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. After the collective bargaining bill was upheld by the Wisconsin Supreme Court on June 14, the number of protesters declined to about 1,000 within a couple days.

2011 Wisconsin Supreme Court election

The Wisconsin Supreme Court election of 2011 took place on Tuesday, April 5, 2011. Unlike past elections for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, the race between 12-year incumbent David Prosser, Jr. and challenger Assistant Attorney General JoAnne Kloppenburg gained significant nationwide publicity as it was widely seen as a referendum on Governor Scott Walker's proposed budget reforms in Wisconsin, and a part of the 2011 Wisconsin protests.

The 2012 Wisconsin gubernatorial recall election was a special election to elect the governor and lieutenant governor of Wisconsin. It resulted in voters re-electing incumbent Republican governor Scott Walker over the Democratic candidate Tom Barrett by a larger margin than he had in 2010, in which Walker had also faced Barrett. Recall organizers opposed Walker's agenda, particularly his limiting of collective bargaining rights for state employees and they collected over 900,000 signatures to initiate the recall election process. There was also a recall for Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch. She won her race, defeating Democrat Mahlon Mitchell, making her the first lieutenant governor to run in and survive a recall.

<i>Overpass Light Brigade</i>

Overpass Light Brigade (OLB) is an activist collaborative public art project based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and organized by American artists Lane Hall and Lisa Moline and photographer Joe Brusky. The artwork is an episodic performance originally created as part of the 2011 Wisconsin protests to raise awareness about the campaign to recall Governor Scott Walker. OLB was co-founded by Hall and Moline. Brusky, a community organizer and co-founder of Occupy Riverwest, soon joined the project and facilitated its continued growth and social media presence.

Wisconsin United Roller Derby (WURD) is an all-gender flat-track roller derby league based in Madison, Wisconsin. The league was originally formed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2009 as the first all-men's league in Wisconsin and previously used the names Milwaukee Schlitzkrieg, Milwaukee Blitzdkrieg, and Wisconsin Men's Roller Derby before rebranding as Wisconsin United Roller Derby in August 2019.

The 2018 Wisconsin gubernatorial election took place on November 6, 2018. It occurred concurrently with a Senate election in the state, elections to the state's U.S. House seats, and various other elections. Incumbent Republican Governor Scott Walker sought re-election to a third term, and was challenged by Democratic candidate and then-Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers, as well as Libertarian Phil Anderson and independent Maggie Turnbull. Evers, along with his running mate Mandela Barnes, managed to defeat Walker and Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch in a closely fought and widely watched race, ending unified Republican control of the state.

Paradise City Roller Derby was a women's flat track roller derby league based in Burleigh, Queensland, Australia. Founded in 2013, the league consisted of two teams, which competed against teams from other leagues, and was a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). 2017 was the league's last active year.

The series has become an underground hit for Amazon Prime Video and in May 2020, it was announced that the series would return for a second season.

Haunted State: Theatre of Shadows is a 2017 American documentary film executive produced and directed by Michael Brown. It is the second installment of the Haunted State film series. The film's plot focuses on investigations inside Wisconsin theatres that have paranormal claims surrounding it. The film premiered October 25, 2017 at the historic Oriental Theatre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and it began streaming on Amazon Prime Video on January 2, 2018.

<i>Roller Life</i> 2016 film

Roller Life is a 2016 American documentary film executive produced and directed by Michael Brown. The film's story follows the Brewcity Bruisers, a flat track roller derby league that belongs to the Women's Flat Track Derby Association, for a full season. The film follows around eight roller derby athletes and captures the essence of their lives both on and off the track. The documentary looks into misconceptions of the sport and covers the full action of the roller derby season. Roller Life premiered at the historic Oriental Theatre on October 19, 2016. It was chosen as an official selection to the 2017 Milwaukee film festival. It was added to Amazon Prime's Video streaming service on November 21, 2017.
