Michael Coates is a former Australian rules footballer, who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). [1] He is the son of George Coates, an AFL Life Member and Fitzroy/Brisbane Lions Hall of Fame member. Michael was recruited to Fitzroy from Surrey Hills under the father-son rule. His first senior game was in 1982 (against Carlton) and played 29 senior games in total over the years 1982–1984, and 1986, after having briefly joined the Sydney Swans in 1985.

Gary Pert is a former Australian rules footballer who represented Fitzroy and Collingwood in the Australian Football League (AFL). Tall, well-built and strong in the air, Pert played over 200 league games, despite suffering two serious knee injuries in the prime years of his career. Early in one season, Pert suffered a bizarre injury when he went to his girlfriend's house for dinner and got a biscuit stuck in his oesophagus. The blockage remained overnight and so the following day he underwent an oesophagoscopy under general anaesthetic. He recovered in time for the Round 5 game against Richmond. He returned in 1989, winning Fitzroy's best and fairest.

The 1981 Victorian Football League season was the 85th season of the elite Australian rules football competition. Twelve teams competed in the league, which had remained unchanged since 1925. The season was the last to be competed between exclusively Victoria-based clubs, as South Melbourne would relocate to Sydney in 1982. The season commenced with the first games played on Saturday, 28 March, and concluded with the 1981 VFL Grand Final on Saturday, 26 September.
