Michael Collins is an American former amateur boxer from Texas who was a silver medalist at both the 1982 World Amateur Boxing Championships and 1987 Pan American Games. [1]
Collins was beaten by eventual 1984 Olympic gold medalist Steve McCrory in the flyweight final of the US Olympic trials, before moving up to the bantamweight division. [2] As a three-time national bantamweight champion, Collins entered the 1988 Olympic trials as the favourite, but fell in the semi-finals to Kennedy McKinney, who also went on to win Olympic gold. [3]
Félix Savón Fabre is a Cuban former amateur boxer who competed from 1980 to 2000. Considered one of the all-time greatest amateurs, he became three-time Olympic gold medalist, and the World Champion six times in a row, all in the heavyweight division. In 1988, when he was favored by many to win the gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics, the Cuban government boycotted the event. Savón is particularly known for having rejected numerous multimillion-dollar offers to defect and leave Cuba permanently to fight Mike Tyson as a professional.
The United States of America (USA) competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. 527 competitors, 332 men and 195 women, took part in 230 events in 27 sports. The United States finished outside of the top two in the overall medal count for the first time and in the gold medal count for only the second time. That was mainly caused by the extensive state-sponsored doping programs that were developed in these communist countries to fulfil their political agenda on an international stage.
Michael Bentt is an American film and television actor, and former professional boxer who competed from 1989 to 1994. He was born in East Dulwich, London, but raised in the Cambria Heights section of Queens in New York City. Bentt won the WBO heavyweight title from Tommy Morrison in 1993, losing the title in his first defense in 1994 to Herbie Hide.
Troy Glenn Dorsey is a former U.S. boxer and kickboxer who competed in the bantamweight, featherweight and lightweight divisions. Known predominantly for his physical endurance and power, Dorsey began his martial arts training in karate and taekwondo at the age of ten before later making the switch to full contact kickboxing. He was a three-time kickboxing world champion as well as a gold medalist of the WAKO Amateur World Championships in both 1985 (London) and 1987 (Munich). He then began dedicating himself to boxing in 1989. He won the IBF World Featherweight Championship and IBO World Super Featherweight Championship before retiring in 1998.
Lorenzo Aragón Armenteros is a former amateur boxer from Cuba, who was a two-time world champion in the welterweight category.
Bernardo José Piñango Figuera is a Venezuelan former professional boxer who competed from 1981 to 1990. He is a world champion in two weight classes, having held the WBA and The Ring bantamweight titles from 1986 to 1987 and the WBA super bantamweight title in 1988. As an amateur boxer, he won a silver medal in the bantamweight division (-54 kg) at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. In the final he lost to Cuba's Juan Hernández on points (0-5).
Junior Jones is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1989 to 2002. He held world championships in two weight classes, including the World Boxing Association (WBA) bantamweight title from 1993 to 1994 and the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight title from 1996 to 1997. He also held the International Boxing Organization (IBO) featherweight title from 1999 to 2000.
Kennedy McKinney is an American former professional boxer, who won the bantamweight gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics. As a professional, he won the IBF and WBO super bantamweight titles.
Andrew Maynard is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1989 to 2000. As an amateur boxer, he won the gold medal in the Light Heavyweight division at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
Horace "Lefty" Gwynne was a bantamweight professional boxer from Canada, who competed in the 1930s and won the gold medal at the 1932 Summer Olympics. He was still an amateur when he won the gold medal.
