The High Court of Australia is Australia's apex court. It exercises original and appellate jurisdiction on matters specified within Australia's Constitution.

The Federal Court of Australia is an Australian superior court of record which has jurisdiction to deal with most civil disputes governed by federal law, along with some summary and indictable criminal matters. It was established in 1976 by the Federal Court of Australia Act.
Sir Archibald Paull Burt QC was a British lawyer, politician and judge. He grew up on the island of Saint Christopher in the West Indies, where both he and his father owned slaves. He studied law in England and returned to Saint Christopher where he served as speaker of the house of assembly, attorney-general and chief justice. In 1861, Burt was appointed as the colony of Western Australia's inaugural chief justice. He held the position until his death in 1879 and was the patriarch of one of the so-called "six hungry families" of the colony.
Sir John Alfred Northmore KCMG was a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Western Australia, which is the highest ranking court in the state of Western Australia. Northmore was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court in 1914 before being appointed Chief Justice in 1931. He retired in 1945 and died in 1958. He also served as Administrator of Western Australia from 1931 to 1933, fulfilling the functions of Governor after financial straits prevented a permanent successor to Governor Sir William Campion.

He was 43 years old upon commencing his appointment on the High Court and is eligible to continue until reaching the constitutionally required retirement age of 70 in 2044.
Sir Herbert Nicholls was an Australian judge and politician, who was Chief Justice of Tasmania from 1914 to 1937, and as an independent member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly from 1900 to 1909. In parliament, he served as Attorney-General and Leader of the Opposition.
