Michael D. Ellison (aka MIKE-E, Mike Ellis, Michael Ellison) is an African American recording artist. He is well known for his slam poetry performances and his involvement with the Detroit Concert of Colors annual event.

Biography

Ellison was born in Ethiopia to expatriate African American parents who lived and worked in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa. [1]

Performance work

Ellison is noted for his slam poetry and hip-hop performances, which he performs under the name MIKE-E [2] as well as with his group called AfroFlow. He has performed in several venues such as HBO's Def Poetry, [3] for the National Football League, [4] for Toyota, [5] and for the NAACP. [5] MIKE-E's music was also used by the Barack Obama presidential campaign,. [6]

Ellison had a narration role and also appeared in the film Standing in the Shadows of Motown . [5] He has also appeared as a part of marketing campaign for the urban fashion brand Pelle Pelle as a part of their 25th anniversary. [5]

Concert of Colors involvement

As a part of his Detroit-based work, Ellison has been a regular participant in the city's Concert of Colors annual event, [3] which emphasizes both world talent in addition to performances from performers originally from Detroit. [2] Ellison has been called a highlight of the event [7] One of Ellison's performances called Stepping into Destiny demonstrated various transitions in American music from field holler work songs to blues and featured performances from Kenny Watson, saxophonist DeShawn Jones, and drummer Eric Gaston. [7] Previously, Ellison's production was sold out and many attendants were unable to attend, causing organizers to plan a separate performance was held at Detroit's Scarab Club. [7]

The AfroFlow Tour

MIKE-E’s performances addressing the disproportionate tobacco advertising aimed at youth, ethnic and economically challenged populations brought him to the attention of the American Cancer Society (ACS). [8] In 2007, the ACS partnered with MIKE-E, sponsoring the Afroflow Tour. [8] Entering its fourth year in 2010, the tour of U.S. colleges and universities, middle and high schools, churches, communities and music venues was intended to engage youth, young adults and families nationwide in the fight against cancer, as well as tobacco prevention and cessation. [9] MIKE-E also wrote, produced and appeared in a series of public service announcements for the ACS, one of which (Victorious) features his aunt, a cancer and heart transplant survivor.

Spoken word Type of performance art

Spoken word refers to an oral poetic performance art that is based mainly on the poem as well as the performer's aesthetic qualities. It is a late 20th century continuation of an ancient oral artistic tradition that focuses on the aesthetics of recitation and word play, such as the performer's live intonation and voice inflection. Spoken word is a "catchall" term that includes any kind of poetry recited aloud, including poetry readings, poetry slams, jazz poetry, and hip hop music, and can include comedy routines and prose monologues. Unlike written poetry, the poetic text takes its quality less from the visual aesthetics on a page, but depends more on phonaesthetics, or the aesthetics of sound.

The Gathering of the Juggalos is an annual festival put on by Psychopathic Records, featuring performances by the entire label roster as well as numerous well-known musical groups and underground artists. It was founded by Jumpsteady, Insane Clown Posse, and their label in 2000. Described by Joseph Bruce as a "Juggalo Woodstock", the Gathering of the Juggalos spans five days and includes concerts, wrestling, games, contests, autograph sessions, karaoke, and seminars with artists. Over its first eleven events (2000–2010), the festival drew a total attendance upward of 100,000 fans.

Russell Simmons presents Def Poetry, better known as simply Def Poetry Jam or Def Poetry, is a spoken word poetry television series hosted by Mos Def and airing on HBO between 2002 and 2007. The series features performances by established and up-and-coming spoken word poets. Performances also include special appearances by well-known actors and musicians, as well as occasional performances by Mos Def himself. Co-created by Bruce George, Danny Simmons, Deborah Pointer, Stan Lathan, and Russell Simmons, the show is a spin-off of the popular Def Comedy Jam which began airing on HBO in the 1990s. As with Def Comedy, Simmons appears at the end of every episode to thank the audience.

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network is a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society. It was founded in September 2001 to directly lobby the goals of the American Cancer Society, which is subject to restrictions on advocacy activities because of its tax classification. ACS CAN works to make cancer a national priority. Specifically, it advocates for better access to care, cancer prevention and early detection programs, cancer research funding, regulation of tobacco by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, better quality of life for cancer patients, and attempts to raise awareness of and reduce cancer disparities. Mike Posner American musician

Michael Robert Henrion Posner is an American singer, songwriter, poet, and record producer. Posner released his debut album, 31 Minutes to Takeoff, on August 10, 2010. The album includes the US Billboard Hot 100 top 10 single "Cooler than Me" as well as the top 20 single "Please Don't Go". In 2016 he released his second album, At Night, Alone. A remix of his 2015 single "I Took a Pill in Ibiza" from the album peaked in the top 10 on the charts in 27 countries around the world, including hitting number one in many and the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. He has written songs for a great number of fellow artists. In March 2017, he released his first book of poetry, Tear Drops & Balloons. Posner is also a member of the alternative hip-hop and R&B duo Mansionz with Matthew Musto. On April 15, 2019, Posner started to walk across the continental United States, from New Jersey to California. He completed the journey on October 18, 2019, after surviving a rattlesnake bite in August 2019 in Colorado.

AfroFlow is a musical group, heavily influenced by African beats through drums, spoken word, and call and response. The group started the Afroflow tour in 2006. They have partnered with the American Cancer Society (ACS) to speak out against the tobacco industry and to reach out to young adults about the dangers of tobacco use. The group consists of Mike-E, DJ Invisible, Kenny Watson, and Sowande Keita.

IN-Q or IN-Query, is the stage name of Adam Schmalholz, an American songwriter and National Poetry Slam champion from Los Angeles, California. Schmalholz describes his poetry as a reflection of his own experiences and life lessons. Recognized for his ability to bring poetry to pop culture, IN-Q helped establish one of the largest open mic poetry venues in the United States called "Da Poetry Lounge," held at the Greenway Court Theatre in Los Angeles.
