Michael Lounsbury (born 1966) is an American organizational theorist, and a Professor, the A.F (Chip) Collins Chair, and Chair of the strategy, entrepreneurship and management at the University of Alberta, and expert in innovation and institutions. [1] [2]

Biography

Lounsbury received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1999. Previously, he was a J. Thomas Clark Professor of Entrepreneurship and Personal Enterprise at Cornell University. [3]

Currently he is a Professor, the A.F (Chip) Collins Chair, and Chair of the of Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Management at the University of Alberta, where he is the Academic Director of the eHUB Entrepreneurship Centre.

He is editor-in-chief of Research in the Sociology of Organizations published by Emerald Group Publishing.

In 2018, Lounsbury was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Management (1% of membership) whose purpose is “to recognize and honor members of the Academy of Management who have made significant contributions to the science and practice of management” In 2020, Lounsbury received the J. Gordin Kaplan Award for Excellence in Research, the most prestigious University of Alberta research award. He is among the most highly cited researchers in the field of Management.

Work

His research has contributed to the new institutionalism by focusing on entrepreneurial dynamics and the emergence of new industries and practices. He has published research on cultural entrepreneurship and social movement activism in the building of a recycling industry, money manager professionalization in the mutual fund industry, and the co-evolution of nanoscience and nanotechnology. His most recent work is on emancipatory entrepreneurship in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

His book, The Institutional Logics Perspective (coauthored with Patricia Thornton and William Ocasio), was the 2013 co-winner of the Academy of Management's George R. Terry book award. The prize is awarded to the book that makes the most outstanding contribution to management knowledge.

He is especially well known for his pioneering work on cultural entrepreneurship, and In 2019, he published with Mary Ann Glynn and Cambridge University Press book entitled, Cultural Entrepreneurship: A New Agenda for the Study of Entrepreneurial Processes and Possibilities.

In 2024, he published a book with Joel Gehman, A Concise Introduction to Organization Theory: From Ontological Differences to Robust Identities, that provides an important new introduction to the field of organization studies (publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing).

Allied Academies is a reportedly fraudulent corporation chartered under the laws of North Carolina. Its postal address is in London, United Kingdom. It presents itself as an association of scholars, with supporting and encouraging research and the sharing and exchange of knowledge as its stated aims. The organization consists of 30 affiliate academies, which provide awards to academics and publish academic journals both online and in hard copy for members. Since 2015 the organization has been listed on Jeffrey Beall's list of "potential, possible, or probable predatory scholarly open-access publishers". It is in a partnership with OMICS Publishing Group which uses its website and logo. In 2018, OMICS owner Srinubabu Gedela declared that he had informed the Nevada court that Allied Academies was a subsidiary of OMICS International. During a conference in 2018, they falsely listed a prominent chemist among its organizing committee who had not agreed to this and was not affiliated with Allied Academies.

Walter W. Powell, born August 15, 1951, is a contemporary American sociologist. Powell is Professor of Education, Sociology, Organizational Behavior, Management Science and Engineering, and Communication at Stanford University and the Stanford Graduate School of Education since 1999 and is known for his contributions to organizational theory, in particular to the new institutionalism and network theory. Since 2000, he has been an external faculty member of the Santa Fe Institute.

Rational choice institutionalism (RCI) is a theoretical approach to the study of institutions arguing that actors use institutions to maximize their utility, and that institutions affect rational individual behavior. Rational choice institutionalism arose initially from the study of congressional behaviour in the U.S. in the late 1970s. Influential early RCI scholarship was done by political economists at California Institute of Technology, University of Rochester, and Washington University. It employs analytical tools borrowed from neo-classical economics to explain how institutions are created, the behaviour of political actors within it, and the outcome of strategic interaction.

Sociological institutionalism is a form of new institutionalism that concerns "the way in which institutions create meaning for individuals." Its explanations are constructivist in nature. According to Ronald L. Jepperson and John W. Meyer, Sociological institutionalism

treats the “actorhood” of modern individuals and organizations as itself constructed out of cultural materials – and treats contemporary institutional systems as working principally by creating and legitimating agentic actors with appropriate perspectives, motives, and agendas. The scholars who have developed this perspective have been less inclined to emphasize actors’ use of institutions and more inclined to envision institutional forces as producing and using actors. By focusing on the evolving construction and reconstruction of the actors of modern society, institutionalists can better explain the dramatic social changes of the contemporary period – why these changes cut across social contexts and functional settings, and why they often become worldwide in character.

Behavioral strategy refers to the application of insights from psychology and behavioral economics to the research and practice of strategic management. In one definition of the field, "Behavioral strategy merges cognitive and social psychology with strategic management theory and practice. Behavioral strategy aims to bring realistic assumptions about human cognition, emotions, and social behavior to the strategic management of organizations and, thereby, to enrich strategy theory, empirical research, and real-world practice".
