Michael B. Murphy is an Irish doctor and academic. He was the President of University College Cork from 2007 to 2017. [1] [2] [3] Since April 2019, Murphy is president of the European University Association (EUA). [4]
Murphy earned his undergraduate degree in medicine at University College Cork (UCC), graduating in 1973. He undertook further studies at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London, England. He then studied for a doctorate at the National University of Ireland, which he completed in 1984. [5]
From 1984 to 1992, Murphy taught medicine and pharmacology at the University of Chicago in the United States. [5] In 1992, he returned to Ireland and UCC, where he had been appointed Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. [5] He was appointed the dean of the faculty of medicine and health at UCC in 2000, before becoming the head of its college of medicine and health in 2006. [6] In December 2006, he was announced as the next President of University College Cork. [6] He took up the post on 1 February 2007 in succession to Gerry Wrixon. [7] He stepped down as president in 2017, after ten years leading UCC, and was succeeded by Patrick O'Shea. [8]
As a physician, Murphy practised medicine at St Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin and at St Finbarr's Hospital, Cork. [6]
Statins are a class of medications that reduce illness and mortality in people who are at high risk of cardiovascular disease. They are the most commonly prescribed cholesterol-lowering drugs.
Dyslipidemia is a metabolic disorder characterized by abnormally high or low amounts of any or all lipids or lipoproteins in the blood. Dyslipidemia is a risk factor for the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD), which include coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, and peripheral artery disease. Although dyslipidemia is a risk factor for ASCVD, abnormal levels don't mean that lipid lowering agents need to be started. Other factors, such as comorbid conditions and lifestyle in addition to dyslipidemia, is considered in a cardiovascular risk assessment. In developed countries, most dyslipidemias are hyperlipidemias; that is, an elevation of lipids in the blood. This is often due to diet and lifestyle. Prolonged elevation of insulin resistance can also lead to dyslipidemia. Likewise, increased levels of O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) may cause dyslipidemia.
The Heart Protection Study was a randomized controlled trial run by the Clinical Trial Service Unit, and funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the British Heart Foundation (BHF) in the United Kingdom. It studied the use of the cholesterol lowering drug, simvastatin 40 mg and vitamin supplementation in people who were at risk of cardiovascular disease. It was led by Jane Armitage, an epidemiologist at the Clinical Trial Service Unit.

He specialises in infectious and tropical diseases, clinical immunology, and internal medicine, with a special interest in HIV/AIDS, respiratory infections, and diseases of poverty. He is known for his leadership of infectious/tropical diseases research and capacity development activities. He was awarded a Knighthood in the 2017 Queens Birthday Honours list for services to public health and protection from infectious disease. Otto Herbert Wolff, was a German born medical scientist, paediatrician and was the Nuffield Professor of Child Health at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Wolff was notable for being one of the first paediatricians in Britain to set up a clinic for obese children. Later research into plasma lipids with Harold Salt pioneered the techniques of lipoprotein electrophoresis. He later conducted research into the role of lipid disturbance in childhood as a precursor of coronary artery disease and his recognition in 1960 of the rare condition of abetalipoproteinaemia. Wolff was also co-discoverer of the Edwards syndrome in abnormal chromosomes.
