Michael Schnitzler (born May 30, 1961 in Berkeley, California) is an Austrian American ecologist and musician. [1]
Michael Schnitzler was born to Austrian parents, Heinrich (1902–1982) and Lilly Schnitzler (born 1911), née Strakosch-Feldringen, the daughter of the sugar industrialist Siegfried Strakosch, who fled from the country after the Anschluss in 1938. [2] [3] [4] He is also the grandson of the Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler. In 1959 the family moved back to Vienna, where he studied violin at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna. At the age of 15 he played in the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic as a substitute, and from 1967 to 1983 he was first concertmaster of the Vienna Symphony. From 1982 to 2006 he was professor of violin at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna. Since 1968, he has been violinist of the Haydn Trio Wien (together with pianist Heinz Medjimorec and cellist Walther Schulz), playing over 1500 concerts and recording a substantial part of the piano trio literature.
Michael Schnitzler founded the NGO Rainforest of the Austrians [5] with the purpose of collecting funds to buy land within the Esquinas forest, Costa Rica. Soon, his voluntary work as a conservationist took up more time than his profession as a musician. Rainforest of the Austrians has since raised more than $3,000,000 and purchased 10,000 acres of rainforest, which were donated to the Costa Rican government to become part of Piedras Blancas National Park.
Arthur Schnitzler was an Austrian author and dramatist. He is considered one of the most significant representatives of the Viennese Modernism. Schnitzler’s works, which include psychological dramas and narratives, dissected turn-of-the-century Viennese bourgeois life, making him a sharp and stylistically conscious chronicler of Viennese society around 1900.
Johann Heinrich Schmelzer was an Austrian composer and violinist of the middle Baroque era. Almost nothing is known about his early years, but he seems to have arrived in Vienna during the 1630s, and remained composer and musician at the Habsburg court for the rest of his life. He enjoyed a close relationship with Emperor Leopold I, was ennobled by him, and rose to the rank of Kapellmeister in 1679. He died during a plague epidemic only months after getting the position.
Friedrich Cerha was an Austrian composer, conductor, and academic teacher. His ensemble Die Reihe in Vienna was instrumental in spreading contemporary music in Austria. He composed several operas, beginning with Baal, based on Brecht's play. He is best known for completing Alban Berg's opera Lulu by orchestrating its unfinished third act, which premiered in Paris in 1979.

Hatto Beyerle was a German-Austrian violist who played mainly as a chamber musician, conductor and academic teacher. He was a founding member of the Alban Berg Quartet, and remained with the string quartet until 1981. He was professor of viola and chamber music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna from 1964 to 1987, and also taught at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover, the City of Basel Music Academy and Fiesole School of Music, besides international master classes, influencing notable chamber music ensembles. He initiated and directed the European Chamber Music Academy in 2004.
