The Mid Devon Lawn Tennis Tournament was a Victorian era combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament first staged August 1883, [1] [2] organised by the Mid-Devon Lawn Tennis Club, [3] and held at the club ground, Eggesford, Mid Devon, England. The tournament ended in 1895 and was not staged again due to a lack of participation.

History

The Mid Devon Lawn Tennis Tournament was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament on 28 August 1883. [4] At the first meeting of this tournament Irelands William Norton Barry, [5] won the men's singles, the men's doubles was won by Charles Lacy Sweet and Mr. H. Nash. The women's singles was won by Katharine Hole who defeated Mrs. Hoare wife of Thomas Hoare who competed at the 1879 Wimbledon Championships. [6]

The Mid Devon Lawn Tennis Tournament ran until 1895, it was not staged again due to a lack of participation by players in the event. [7]

Writing in 1891 the North Devon Journal was already reporting on its pending demise.

"The tournament of the Mid-Devon Lawn Tennis Club was brought to a close at Eggesford on Friday. There were very few visitors to the ground, and the play was not very interesting".

The 1877 Wimbledon Championship was a men's tennis tournament held at the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon, London. It was the world's first official lawn tennis tournament, and was later recognised as the first Grand Slam tournament or "Major". The AEC & LTC had been founded in July 1868, as the All England Croquet Club. Lawn tennis was introduced in February 1875 to compensate for the waning interest in croquet. In June 1877 the club decided to organise a tennis tournament to pay for the repair of its pony roller, needed to maintain the lawns. A set of rules was drawn up for the tournament, derived from the first standardised rules of tennis issued by the Marylebone Cricket Club in May 1875.

The 1881 Men's tennis tour was composed of the fifth annual pre-open era tour now incorporated 42 tournaments staged in Australia, Canada, Great Britain and Ireland, and the United States. The 1881 Wimbledon Championships was won by William Renshaw. This year also saw the inaugural and important 1881 U.S. National Championships held at Newport Casino which Richard Sears won. This was also the year that the United States National Lawn Tennis Association, which is the world's first national tennis association, was founded. Renshaw then won two other big tournaments of the year, the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships and Princes Club Championships, whilst Richard Taswell Richardson won the prestigious Northern Championships.

The Wimbledon Championships and Irish Championships was won by William Renshaw, the U.S. National Championships was won by Richard Sears collecting his second title other big winners were Richard Taswell Richardson picking up the Northern Lawn Tennis Championships and Ernest Renshaw winning the Princes Club Championships, The title leader this season was Robert W. Braddell winning 4 tournaments from 6 finals.

Charles Lacy Sweet (1861–1892) was a British tennis player in the early years of Wimbledon. He was a semi finalist at the 1887 Wimbledon Championships – Men's singles. He was active for ten years from 1882 to 1892, and won 9 singles titles.

1880 Women's Lawn Tennis season was mainly composed of national, regional, county, local regular amateur tournaments. This year twelve tennis events for women were staged three of the them in Ireland and nine events in England between May and October 1880

The Newon Abbott Lawn Tennis Tournament a late Victorian era grass court tennis tournament staged first staged on 23 September 1878. The tournament was organised by the Newton Abbot Archery and Lawn Tennis Club, and was played at the South Devon Cricket Club Ground, Newton Abbot, Devon, England. The tournament was held until 1883.

The Dorchester Kingston Park Tournament a late Victorian era grass court tennis tournament staged first staged in August 1879. The tournament was organised by the Kingston Park Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club, and held on the cricket grounds, Kingston Park, Kingston Maurward House, Dorchester, Dorset, England. The tournament was held to at least 1885.
