The Breeders' Cup World Championships is an annual series of Grade I Thoroughbred horse races, operated by Breeders' Cup Limited, a company formed in 1982. From its inception in 1984 through 2006, it was a single-day event; starting in 2007, it expanded to two days. All sites have been in the United States, except in 1996, when the races were at the Woodbine Racetrack in Canada.

Alec Head's horses won The Derby and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
With Approval was a Thoroughbred racehorse who won the Canadian Triple Crown in 1989 under jockey Don Seymour. Even though he missed the rest of his three-year-old season due to injury, he was named the 1989 Canadian Horse of the Year.

Smart Strike was a Canadian Thoroughbred racehorse. The son of the Champion sire, Mr. Prospector, and out of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame mare Classy 'n Smart, Smart Strike is a half-brother to 1991 Canadian Triple Crown champion Dance Smartly.
East of the Moon was a French Thoroughbred racehorse. She was bred in the United States by Flaxman Holdings Ltd., the breeding arm of the racing stables of shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos. She was sired by multiple American Grade 1 winner Private Account, a son of U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Damascus. Her dam was Niarchos's French star and U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Miesque who twice won the Breeders' Cup Mile.
English Channel was an American Champion Thoroughbred racehorse and a leading sire of turf horses in North America. In four years of racing, he competed in 23 races, winning 13, finishing second in four, and finishing third in one. His final victory came at the 2007 Breeders' Cup Turf, where he set a record for this race when he won by seven lengths. Following this race, he was retired to stud in Lexington, Kentucky.
Blushing John is a millionaire Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in France and in the United States. He was bred by Frank Groves' North Ridge Farm near Lexington, Kentucky, and ran under the banner of Allen E. Paulson as his owner. Out of the mare La Griffe, he was a son of the very influential Champion sire Blushing Groom.

Unusual Heat was a Thoroughbred stallion owned by a syndicate headed by California breeder/owner Madeline Auerbach in conjunction with California trainer Barry Abrams. In 2015, he had a full book and stood for $20,000 (lfg). From 2011 through 2015, he stood at Harris Farms in Coalinga, California.
Warning was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was the leading two-year-old colt in Europe in 1987 when he was unbeaten in four races including the Richmond Stakes and the Champagne Stakes. As a three-year-old he missed the British Classic Races but proved himself to be an outstanding specialist miler, winning the Sussex Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. He was less successful in 1989, but added a win in the Queen Anne Stakes. He was retired to stud at the end of that year and became a successful sire of winners in Britain and Japan.
Milligram was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare, best known for her win over Miesque and Sonic Lady in the 1987 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. In a racing career which lasted from September 1986 until November 1987 she ran nine times and won four races. Apart from the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, she won the Coronation Stakes and Waterford Crystal Mile, as well as finishing second in the Prix Marcel Boussac, 1000 Guineas and Irish 1,000 Guineas. She was the highest-rated horse in the United Kingdom over one mile in 1987. Milligram was retired at the end of her three-year-old season and had some success as a broodmare.
World Approval is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 2017 Breeders' Cup Mile. A minor stakes winner at age three, he won his first Grade I race at age four in the United Nations Stakes. At age five, he won five of six starts including the Grade I Fourstardave Handicap and Woodbine Mile before his victory at the Breeders' Cup.
Win Approval was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and "Blue Hen" broodmare. She was the daughter of With Approval, who was the winner of the Canadian Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing and a Champion turf racer. She had an unremarkable racing career, running for her breeder between 1994 and 1996. After her retirement from racing she became an exceptional broodmare, producing four graded stakes race winners from ten foals. Her progeny earned $8,936,808. She was named the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association Broodmare of the Year for 2017. She was euthanized at age 29 in 2021.
