Mike Dempsey is a British graphic designer.

Career

From the late 1960s, Dempsey worked in British publishing houses. [1] . He created stamps for the Royal Mail, [2] the brand identity for English National Opera, [3] and South Bank Centre [4] His won 10 silver and gold awards from British Design & Art Direction (D&AD). [2] He was a Design Advisor to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, [5] and was President of Design & Art Direction (D&AD). [6]

He was made a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) in 1994 [7] He was Master of the Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry from 2005 to 2007 [8] and is currently[ when? ] the external design advisor to the Design Council. [9]

Royal Designer for Industry is a distinction established by the British Royal Society of Arts (RSA) in 1936, to encourage a high standard of industrial design and enhance the status of designers. Those who are British citizens take the letters RDI after their names, while those who are not become Honorary RDIs (HonRDI). He was born in London, England and rose to prominence in the mid-1960s while designing for the Royal Ballet and the Royal Opera House. He was the creative director of the Beatles' 1969 album Abbey Road.

Design and Art Direction (D&AD), formerly known as British Design and Art Direction, is a British educational organisation that was created in 1962 to promote excellence in design and advertising. Its main offices are in Spitalfields in London. It is most famous for its annual awards, the D&AD Pencils. The highest award given by D&AD, the Black Pencil, is not necessarily awarded every year.

Design Week is a UK-based website, formerly a magazine for the design industry. It was first published in October 1986 by Centaur Communications. According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations primary circulation for 2007 was 8,074. In 2011, Design Week became a digital-only publication. On 22 January 2019, Centaur Media announced that Design Week had become part of Xeim, a rebranded marketing division.

Malcolm Leslie Garrett is a British graphic designer, and Creative Director of Images&Co, a communications design consultancy based in London, UK. He is Ambassador for Manchester School of Art and co-founder of the annual Design Manchester festival, now in its eighth year.

Richard Hudson is a Zimbabwean stage designer best known for his work for The Lion King, which won him the Tony Award for Best Scenic Design and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Set Design. He studied at Wimbledon School of Art.

George Hardie is an English graphic designer, illustrator and educator, best known for his work producing cover art for the albums of rock musicians and bands with the British art design group Hipgnosis.

Martin John Lambie-Nairn was an English designer. He was the founder of his branding agency Lambie-Nairn and was the creative director of branding agency ML-N. He is recognised for having redefined television brand identity design, being the first to embrace computer technologies to apply branding to screen-based media.

The Fontana Modern Masters was a series of pocket guides on writers, philosophers, and other thinkers and theorists who shaped the intellectual landscape of the twentieth century. The first five titles were published on 12 January 1970 by Fontana Books, the paperback imprint of William Collins & Co, and the series editor was Frank Kermode, who was Professor of Modern English Literature at University College London. The books were very popular with students, who "bought them by the handful", according to Kermode, and they were instantly recognisable by their eye-catching covers, which featured brightly coloured abstract art and sans-serif typography.

Alison Chitty is an Olivier Award winning production designer and set and costume designer, known for her collaborations with Mike Leigh, Francesca Zambello, Peter Gill and Sir Peter Hall. She is also the Director of the Motley Theatre Design Course, a successor to Motley Theatre Design Group. Both organisations included Margaret Harris as one of their founders.

John David Lloyd is a British graphic designer who in 1975 co-founded the international design consultancy Lloyd Northover. He has worked in all fields of graphic design but has specialised in corporate identity.

Johnson Banks is a design consultancy in London founded in 1992 by Michael Johnson. The company specialises in brand consultancy and visual identity systems, focusing on work in the cultural, Government and charity sectors.

Michael Johnson is a British designer and brand consultant. In 1992 he founded the design studio Johnson Banks in London, UK. Johnson received the Design and Art Direction (D&AD) black pencil award for his fruit and veg stamp designs and the organisation's President's award in 2017. Johnson has published three books and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) have nineteen of his designs in their permanent collection.

Ben Terrett is a British designer. He was the first Royal Designer for Industry elected for Service Design and has won the Design Museum's Design of the Year, a D&AD "Black Pencil" and is in the Design Week Hall of Fame. Terrett specialises in large digital projects and is most well known for his work designing the GOV.UK website.

John Anthony Gillard was an influential British teacher of advertising and design whose notable students included Sir John Hegarty, Michael Peters, and Graham Fink. In a joint letter to Design Week magazine shortly after his death, leading figures from the creative industries described Gillard as "without question the greatest inspirational teacher that the UK design and advertising industry has ever had".
