Mike Jankowski, (born 1976) known as "Coach Janks," [1] is a skiing and snowboarding coach.

Early life

Jankowski is from Memphis, Tennessee, the youngest child of Madaline and Len Jankowski. [2] [3] He graduated from Christian Brothers High School, [2] [4] and attended Northern Arizona University. [5]

Coaching career

In the mid-to-late 1990s, Jankowski was a snowboarding instructor at Arizona Snowbowl near Flagstaff. [3] [5] [6]

He was coach of the U.S. Junior National Team, then promoted to assistant coach of the Olympic Team, before being given the head coaching job. [2] [7] [8]

Jankowski was the Head U.S. Freeskiing and U.S. Snowboarding Coach, and the U.S. Snowboarding Halfpipe and Slopestyle Head Coach, for the 2014 U.S. Snowboarding Team at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. [2] [7] [9] [10] [11] [12]

He has coached Gretchen Bleiler, Kelly Clark, Arielle Gold, Taylor Gold, Danny Kass, Scotty Lago, Hannah Teter, and Shaun White, and as of February 2014 had coached athletes to 19 Olympic medals since 2006. [6] [13]

Freeskiing

Freeskiing, or new school skiing is a specific type of alpine skiing, which involves tricks, jumps, and terrain park features, such as rails, boxes, jibs, or other obstacles. This form of skiing resulted from the growth of snowboarding combined with the progression of freestyle skiing. "Newschoolers", or those who specifically ski in this style, as opposed to traditional freestylers, freeriders, big mountain skiers, and racers, are often found in terrain parks, which are designed specifically for tricks.

Hannah Teter American snowboarder

Hannah Teter is an American snowboarder. She is an Olympic champion, having won the gold medal in halfpipe at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy and silver at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. She also won bronze at the 2005 FIS World Championships at Whistler, British Columbia, and has six World Cup victories in her career. In January 2010, Teter was named to the US Team for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. She won the silver medal in women's halfpipe at the Vancouver Games. Teter came in fourth at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Sarah Burke 20th and 21st-century Canadian freeskier

Sarah Jean Burke was a Canadian freestyle skier who was a pioneer of the superpipe event. She was a five-time Winter X Games gold medallist, and won the world championship in the halfpipe in 2005. She successfully lobbied the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to have the event added to the Olympic program for the 2014 Winter Olympics. She was considered a medal favourite in the event. Burke died following a training accident in Utah in 2012.

Iouri Podladtchikov Russian-Swiss snowboarder

Iouri Iourеvich Podladtchikov is a Russian-born Swiss snowboarder. He rides goofy stance. He has competed since 2000. He won the gold medal for the halfpipe at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Kazuhiro Kokubo Japanese snowboarder

Kazuhiro Kokubo is a Japanese snowboarder who has won multiple medals in international events, including consecutive golds in US Open Halfpipe in 2010 and 2011. He competed at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics and 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, representing Japan.

Nicholas Charles Goepper is an American freestyle skier. Representing the United States of America, Goepper won a bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia and won a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. He has also won three gold medals and two silver medals at the Winter X Games. His sponsors include PowerBar, Red Bull, and Völkl.

The United States competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, from February 7 to 23, 2014. Team USA consisted of 222 athletes competing in all 15 sports.

Ayumu Hirano is a Japanese competitive snowboarder. He won the silver medal in the superpipe in 2013 Winter X Games XVII at the age of 14, becoming the youngest medalist in X Games history, and won silver medals in the halfpipe at both the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Gus Kenworthy American and British freestyle skier

Augustus Richard Kenworthy is a British–American freestyle skier, actor, and YouTuber. He competes in slopestyle, halfpipe and big air. Kenworthy won the silver medal in Men's slopestyle at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. As of 2019, Kenworthy represents Great Britain. He was cast as Chet Clancy in the ninth season of the horror anthology series American Horror Story: 1984.

Taylor Gold is an American Olympian snowboarder. He competes in the halfpipe.

Kaitlyn Brooke Farrington is an American former professional snowboarder who grew up on a cattle ranch near Bellevue, Idaho, and now lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. She won the gold medal in the women's half-pipe competition at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Prior to her Olympic debut, she competed in the 2010 European Winter X Games and won the gold medal.

James Machon is a freestyle skier who competes in the halfpipe, his first Olympics was the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Mirjam Jäger Swiss freestyle skier

Mirjam Jaeger is a former freestyle skier. Now she concentrates on her modeling and sports broadcaster career.
