Michael Ryan Lobel (born March 7, 1984) is a Canadian editor, director, actor and musician. He is best known for playing the role of Jay Hogart in the teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation as well as his work as picture editor of the HBO Max series Detention Adventure .
Lobel was born to parents of Polish and Ashkenazi Jewish descent in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he also spent his early years. Lobel is the oldest of two siblings from the same parents. He has an older half-brother; they share the same father.
At a young age he began showing interest in music and visual arts which drew him to Etobicoke School of the Arts. [1] He attended ESA from 1998 to 2003, first majoring in music (he studied percussion) then later switching to drama. While there, he formed several musical groups, including Civilian and the indie rock band Boys Who Say No. [2] It was in his graduating year at ESA that he began working as an actor.
In 2003, Lobel made his film debut in an adaptation of Oliver Twist directed by Jacob Tierney entitled Twist , in which he played a small role as a street thug alongside actor Nick Stahl.
Lobel's most notable performance to date is his portrayal of Jay Hogart, a manipulative school bully on Degrassi: The Next Generation from 2003 to 2010. [3] He maintains that he is nothing like his character in real life. Lobel originally auditioned for the role of Dylan Michalchuk, a complete opposite role of his current, but was instead offered the role of Jay. [4]
In 2009, Lobel starred in Suck as Sam, the drummer of a touring rock & roll band besieged by vampires. He starred alongside rock & roll legends Alice Cooper, Henry Rollins and Iggy Pop. [5] He has also appeared on television in Zixx: Level One and Sue Thomas F.B.Eye and has had starring roles in movies Selling Innocence , Booky Makes Her Mark and Degrassi Goes Hollywood . He made a guest appearance on a television series in 2007, The Best Years . [6]
From 2011 to 2013, he played the role of DJ on the sitcom Really Me . In 2015, he played the small role of Marc in the Canadian TV movie The Music in Me. [3]
In addition to acting, Lobel co-founded the indie pop band Future Peers in 2014 and has toured with the group across Canada, America, and Europe, playing the synth. The band broke up in 2019. [3]
In 2016 Lobel began working as a picture editor, which led to his involvement in the production of HBO Max's Detention Adventure as an editor and director. Mike has also been an editor and director of several music videos and documentaries.
Lobel’s work on Detention Adventure earned him a Canadian Screen Award nomination in 2023. [7]

Degrassi Junior High is a Canadian television series created by Kit Hood and Linda Schuyler. The second series in the Degrassi franchise and the first to be set in a universe that has spanned multiple decades, it aired on the CBC from 18 January 1987 to 27 February 1989, and on PBS in the United States starting from September 1987. A non-union show, it was primarily produced by Playing With Time with involvement from WGBH. Stefan Brogren is a Canadian actor, director, and producer who is best known for his mainstay role as Archie "Snake" Simpson in the Degrassi television franchise. First appearing as a student in the second series Degrassi Junior High (1987-89) and continuing into Degrassi High (1989-91), Brogren played the role of Snake throughout every subsequent entry in the franchise, reprising his role in the revival Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001-15) as a teacher and later principal, and again in Degrassi: Next Class (2016-17).

James Tiberius "J.T." Yorke is a fictional character from the Canadian teen drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation. He was portrayed by Ryan Cooley. He debuted in the first episode of the series and appeared throughout its first six seasons. His role throughout Degrassi: The Next Generation primarily concerns his friendship with Toby Issacs, his relationship with Liberty Van Zandt, and his later brief relationship with Mia Jones. In the show's fifth season, Liberty becomes pregnant after the two become sexually active, with Liberty ultimately deciding to put the baby up for adoption. He then begins to date Mia by the sixth season, but has second thoughts about Liberty. Before he is able to rekindle his relationship with Liberty, he is stabbed to death by Drake Lempkey, a student from rival school Lakehurst, puncturing his aorta and killing him. His death causes tensions between Degrassi and Lakehurst, which are exacerbated by the latter's students being moved to Degrassi in the seventh season.

Created by Carmen Albano and Joe Kicak, the series centres on a group of children who stage elaborate pranks every day at school in the hopes of getting detention, so that they can investigate an unconfirmed rumour that the detention room has a secret trap door leading to the laboratory of Alexander Graham Bell.
