Mikel Smith Gibbs (born September 10, 1963) is a retired American-Spanish professional basketball player and a police officer in Washington, D.C.
Born in New York City, Smith played college basketball for USC–Spartanburg, beginning in 1982.
Smith played for twelve years in Spain, notably for Joventut Badalona and Real Madrid. He was the Spanish League's Finals MVP in 1992. With Joventut Badalona, he won the EuroLeague championship of the 1993–94 season, by winning the 1994 EuroLeague Final Four.
Smith naturalized during his professional basketball play in Spain, and he played internationally for the senior Spain national team at two EuroBasket tournaments, 1995 and 1997.
In January 2024, at age 60, Smith was sworn in as a Washington, D.C. police officer, becoming the oldest rookie in the history of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia. He is scheduled to graduate from the police academy in April 2024. Smith's father was a police sergeant in New York City. [1]
Club Joventut Badalona, S.A.D. is a Spanish professional basketball club based in Badalona, Catalonia, Spain, playing in the Liga ACB and the EuroCup. Known to their fans as La Penya, it is one of only two teams that have never been relegated from the top division of the Spanish League. The only other is Real Madrid. Alejandro "Aíto" García Reneses, usually and most commonly known as just "Aíto", is a Spanish former professional basketball player and coach. As a head coach at the professional club level, García Reneses won the FIBA European Super Cup championship in 1986. He was also a Finalist of Europe's top-tier level pro club competition, the EuroLeague, on three occasions with Spanish club FC Barcelona: in the 1989–90, 1995–96, and 1996–97 seasons. He also coached Barcelona in six EuroLeague Final Fours. García Reneses also won five European-wide professional club championships. He won two European-wide 2nd-tier level championships, as he won the FIBA Saporta Cup championship with FC Barcelona, in the 1985–86 season; and the EuroCup championship with the Spanish club Joventut Badalona, in the 2007–08 season. He also won three European-wide 3rd-tier level championships, as he won the FIBA Korać Cup championship with Joventut Badalona, in the 1986–87 season, the FIBA Korać Cup championship with Barcelona, in the 1998–99 season, and the FIBA EuroChallenge championship with Joventut Badalona, in the 2005–06 season.
