Michael Darren Tana [1] (born 1965/1966) [2] is a New Zealand politician and trade union leader. He was mayor of Porirua from 2016 to 2019.
Tana is from Matakohe,near Ruawai in the Northland region. [3] His iwi are Ngāti Whātua and Ngāpuhi. [4]
He has an agricultural science degree from Massey University. [3]
He has been senior biosecurity adviser at the Ministry for Primary Industries,and the president of the 62,000-strong Public Service Association. [5]
He announced in August 2016 that he would be running for Mayor of Porirua and he ran a poorly-funded campaign. [5] Tana won the mayoral election,receiving 5,887 votes (after other candidates were eliminated on the STV ballot). [6] He is the first Maori mayor of Porirua,and one of only a small number of Maori mayors in New Zealand history. [7]
Tana grew up experiencing racism,and when he was elected Mayor he joined Porirua City up to an anti-racism campaign. [8]

First elected in a by-election in as a Values Party candidate,Smith stood as Values candidate for the Porirua electorate in the 1972,1975 and 1978 elections,with votes of 1051,2176 and 2043;coming third each time and gaining the highest number of votes of any Values Party candidate in the country in 1978. Smith was also the runner-up in the 1977 mayoral election in Porirua.
The Transmission Gully Motorway is a 27-kilometre-long (17-mile),four-lane motorway north of Wellington,New Zealand;it is part of the State Highway 1 route. Construction began on 8 September 2014 and completion was originally scheduled for April 2020,but contractual negotiations as well as difficulties resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic caused delays. The motorway was officially opened on 30 March 2022 and opened to public traffic the following day.
Raymond Ahipene-Mercer is a former New Zealand politician,who served as a Wellington City Councillor for the Eastern Ward,only the second Māori to be elected to the Wellington City Council and the first Māori to be elected since 1962. He is also a guitar-maker,musician,and well-known environmentalist,and was one of the leaders of the Clean Water Campaign,which led to the end of sewage pollution of the Wellington coast. He was a candidate for mayor of Wellington in the council elections of 2007,the first Māori ever to contest the position.He was runner-up to the incumbent. As a musician and guitar maker he usually uses the name Ray Mercer,and has used the name Ray Ahipene-Mercer for other purposes including his environmental work and politics.

While she failed to win the electorate,she was placed first on Te Pāti Māori list,where she won a list seat once the special votes were counted.
Tamatha-Kaye Erin Paul is a New Zealand activist and politician who currently serves in the Wellington City Council for the Pukehīnau Lambton Ward. In 2018 she was the first female Māori to be elected President of the Victoria University of Wellington Students Association. Running as an independent Paul was elected to the city council in 2019. She joined the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand ahead of the 2022 elections.
