Early Life and Influences

Mikey Bennett was born into a Christian family in Jamaica. Church is where Bennett realised he had musical talent. At the age of 12, Bennett was influenced greatly by guitarist Mikey Chung. He would write his lyrics and Chung would help Bennett put them to music. [5] He attended what is now the Northern Caribbean University based in Mandeville, Jamaica.

Career

Bennett has been on the music scene since the 1980s. He has composed and produced music for international artists including Ziggy Marley, Maxi Priest, Dennis Brown, and UB40, Shabba Ranks, J.C. Lodge, Cocoa Tea, Home T Four, Admiral Bailey, and Johnny Osbourne. [6] He recently directed and produced a reggae album titled The Heart of Jamaica for the longtime rum producer Appleton Estate. [7]

Bennett is the CEO of Grafton Studios in Vineyard Town, St. Andrew, Jamaica. He has also taught song writing at the University of Technology (Utech), Kingston, Jamaica. He has received many honours, among them the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) award in 2017 for mentorship. [8]

Social Responsibility

Bennet is involved in the Tower Street Correctional Facility music programme in Kingston, Jamaica and the St Catherine adult correctional centre. [9] Bennett also judges competitions for spotting local musical talents. [10]

The music of Jamaica includes Jamaican folk music and many popular genres, such as mento, ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub music, dancehall, reggae fusion and related styles.

Mento is a style of Jamaican folk music that predates and has greatly influenced ska and reggae music. It is a fusion of African rhythmic elements and European elements, which reached peak popularity in the 1940s and 1950s. Mento typically features acoustic instruments, such as acoustic guitar, banjo, hand drums, and the rhumba box — a large mbira in the shape of a box that can be sat on while played. The rhumba box carries the bass part of the music.

Robert Dixon, known as Bobby Digital, was a Jamaican reggae and dancehall producer. He was given his nickname "Bobby Digital" because King Jammy, whom he worked with in the mid-1980s, had begun experimenting with digital rhythms at around the same time. He owned the Digital B label, and among the artists with hits on the label are Shabba Ranks and Sizzla. He has influenced reggae artists such as Admiral Tibet.

Joseph Vere Everette Johns was a Jamaican journalist, impresario, radio personality, and actor, who helped to launch the careers of many Jamaican musicians through his popular talent contests.

Mikey Chung

Michael Chung also known as Mikey "Mao" Chung, is a keyboard, guitar and percussion player, arranger and record producer of Jamaican music. He has worked with a wide array of musicians from Jamaica and elsewhere, notably Lee Perry and Sly and Robbie.

Clancy Eccles was a Jamaican ska and reggae singer, songwriter, arranger, promoter, record producer and talent scout. Known mostly for his early reggae works, he brought a political dimension to this music. His house band was known as The Dynamites.

The Melodians are a rocksteady band formed in the Greenwich Town area of Kingston, Jamaica, in 1963, by Tony Brevett, Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton. Renford Cogle assisted with writing and arranging material.

Junior Byles

Kerrie Byles, also known as "Junior Byles", "Chubby", or "King Chubby", is a Jamaican reggae singer.

Noel Bartholomew Simms, better known by his nickname and artistic name Scully, was a Jamaican ska, rocksteady and reggae percussionist.

Lloyd Charmers was a ska and reggae singer, keyboard player and record producer.

Highland Ralph Dobson OD was a Jamaican reggae singer and record producer, nicknamed "The Loving Pauper" after one of his best known songs.

Donovan Germain is a reggae producer, one of the most successful of the digital era.

Amos Edwards better known by his stage name General Trees, was one of the most popular Jamaican dancehall deejays of the 1980s, best known for his hits in the latter half of the decade.

Lorna Bennett

Lorna Bennett is a Jamaican reggae singer who twice topped the Jamaican singles chart in the early 1970s, and who is best remembered for her reggae version of "Breakfast in Bed".

Geoffrey Aloysius Chung was a Jamaican musician, recording engineer, and record producer.

Felix Headley Bennett OD, also known as Deadly Headley, was a Jamaican saxophonist who performed on hundreds of recordings since the 1950s.

Edi Fitzroy

Fitzroy Edwards, better known by his stage name Edi Fitzroy, was a Jamaican reggae singer, active from 1975 but best known for his work during the dancehall era.

Protoje

Oje Ken Ollivierre, popularly known as Protoje, is a contemporary reggae singer and songwriter from Jamaica. His mother is Jamaican singer Lorna Bennett, best known for her 1972 rendition of "Breakfast in Bed". His father is a former calypso king from the island nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. He has one daughter with his wife Lindsay.

Peter Ashbourne CD is a Jamaican musician and composer who has worked in classical music, jazz, and popular forms such as reggae, sometimes with his group The Peter Ashbourne Affair and more recently with the jazz band Ashes.

Indie Allen

Michael Allen who goes by the stage name Indie Allen is a Jamaican reggae artist from the parish of Montego Bay St James. Indie Allen is a soulful singer with a captivating falsetto, who is an experience itself when seen live. Blending acoustic folk and roots reggae to create a beautiful balance of love and spirituality, and who moves between the heavy traditional drum and bass to the soulful flame of just the acoustic guitar. Indie Allen's voice gracefully glides between a soaring falsetto, and a rich provocative tenor, with a singjay delivery making his sound and vocal dexterity truly unique. Indie's first introduction to music when was in high school where he was the lead vocalist for an A cappella group. On his journey to making his mark in the music industry, he later relocated to the parish of Kingston, where he became a finalist in Jamaica's top singing competition, Digicel Rising Stars. He has been mentored by the likes of Michael Fletcher and Mikey Bennett.
