Milad Alami

Milad Alami (born 14 May 1982) is a Swedish film director, currently based in Denmark. [1]

Born in Iran, he and his family went to Sweden as refugees and he grew up in Skellefteå in the north of Sweden. [1] He was educated at the National Film School of Denmark, and is currently based in Copenhagen. [1]

His 2015 short film Mommy won the Robert Award for Best Short Fiction/Animation at the 33rd Robert Awards in 2016. [2]

He released his feature-length debut The Charmer (Charmøren) in 2017, [3] and followed up in 2023 with Opponent (Motståndaren). [4]

Night Walk is an American crime thriller drama film written and directed by Aziz Tazi and starring Sean Stone, Mickey Rourke, Sarah Alami, French rapper La Fouine and Eric Roberts. The film is a modern-day Romeo and Juliet between the West and the Middle East that turns into a crime drama. In the film, a hero's quest for justice evolves into a spiritual journey led by Muslim inmates, from the moderate convert to terror-linked fundamentalists. Night Walk was shot between Los Angeles and five cities in Morocco. It premiered at the 2019 Moscow International Film Festival. In 2021, Night Walk was acquired by Lionsgate, making it the first Moroccan film in history to get Hollywood distribution.

Queen of Hearts is a 2019 Danish drama film directed by May el-Toukhy, and starring Trine Dyrholm and Gustav Lindh. The Danish and English film titles obliquely refer to the Queen of Hearts character in the children's book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland which is mentioned repeatedly in the film. The film was selected as the Danish entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. The film won the 2019 Nordic Council Film Prize.

<i>Flee</i> (film) 2021 animated documentary film

Flee is a 2021 independent adult animated documentary film directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen. An international co-production with Denmark, France, Norway, and Sweden, it follows the story of a man under the alias Amin Nawabi, who shares his hidden past of fleeing his home country of Afghanistan to Denmark for the first time. Riz Ahmed and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau serve as executive producers and narrators for the English-language dub version.

<i>Opponent</i> (film) 2023 Swedish-Norwegian drama film

Opponent is a 2023 Swedish-Norwegian drama film written and directed by Milad Alami. The film stars Payman Maadi as Iman, an Iranian man who has moved to Sweden as a refugee with his wife Maryam and their daughters Asal and Sahar. A wrestler in Iran before being forced to escape the country, he turns back to the sport in hopes of speeding up his asylum application by trying out for the Swedish national wrestling team, building toward the revelation that the real reason he was forced to leave Iran was that one of his former teammates outed him to the community as a closeted gay man, which carries the penalty of execution in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
