Milan is a city in Monroe and Washtenaw counties in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 5,836 at the 2010 census. About 60% of the city's area and 75% of its residents are located on the Washtenaw County side adjacent to York Charter Township in Washtenaw County; while 40% percent of the city's area and 25% of its residents are located on the Monroe County side adjacent to Milan Township.

The district is part of the Washtenaw Intermediate School District but most of its 89 square miles are located in neighbouring Monroe County. The Milan Area Schools District serves all of the City of Milan; most of neighbouring York Charter Township and Milan Township, in Washtenaw and Monroe counties, respectively; most of nearby London Township and a portion of Exeter Township, both in Monroe County; and small portions of nearby Saline Township, Pittsfield Charter Township, and Augusta Charter Township, all in Washtenaw County.

Milan Township is a civil township of Monroe County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,670 at the 2000 census. The township was organized in 1836. The city of Milan borders the township on the north, but the two are administrated autonomously since Milan incorporated as a city in 1967.

The Washtenaw County portion of the district is bounded to the north by the Ann Arbor Public Schools; by the Saline Area Schools to the northwest; the Ypsilanti Community Schools to the northeast; and the Lincoln Consolidated Schools are to the east of the Washtenaw portion of the Milan Area Schools while due north of the Monroe County portion of the district. The remainder of the district in Monroe County is bounded by the Airport Community Schools to the east, the Dundee Community Schools to the south, both in Monroe County; and by the Britton-Macon Area Schools to the west, across the line in Lenawee County. From 2004 to 2013 it consisted of all of Branch, Eaton, Hillsdale, Jackson, and Lenawee counties, and included most of Calhoun and a large portion of western and northern Washtenaw counties. The district shifted east in the 2012 redistricting, and now includes the western suburbs of Ann Arbor and Monroe County.

The districts includes the village of Carleton and the surrounding Ash Township, as well as portions of Frenchtown Charter, Exeter, and Berlin Charter townships. Airport Community Schools also includes a very small portion of Sumpter Township in neighboring Wayne County.

Dundee Community Schools is a public school district in Dundee, Michigan. The district includes all of the Village of Dundee; most of Dundee Township, parts of which are served by the Britton-Macon, Summerfield and Ida public school districts; the westernmost portion of Raisinville Township; part of southwestern Exeter Township, including a small westerly strip of the Village of Maybee; and the southerly portions of London and Milan townships. The Monroe County Intermediate School District is an intermediate school district that provides educational services throughout Monroe County, Michigan. The ISD provides numerous services to all nine of Monroe County's public schools, as well as two public charter schools and 15 private schools. The Main Street Historic District is a commercial historic district that includes structures located at 3-153 East Main Street, 1-41 West Main Street, and 8 Park Lane in Milan, Michigan. Although within Milan, the district spans the county line between Washtenaw County, Michigan and Monroe County, Michigan, containing structures within both counties. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

The Willow Run Community Schools (WRCS) was a school district in Washtenaw County, Michigan, serving portions of Superior Township and Ypsilanti Township. It was the sole political entity entirely of the "Willow Run" community. The district headquarters was in Ypsilanti Township.
