Milwaukee Brew (foaled 1997 in Kentucky) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known as one of only three horses to win back-to-back runnings of the Santa Anita Handicap.

Kentucky, officially the Commonwealth of Kentucky, is a state located in the east south-central region of the United States. The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word thoroughbred is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. Thoroughbreds are considered "hot-blooded" horses that are known for their agility, speed, and spirit.

Out of the mare Ask Anita, he was sired by the 1984 Breeders' Cup Classic winner, Wild Again, a grandson of Nearctic. Purchased by prominent Canadian businessman Frank Stronach.

Breeders Cup Classic American Thoroughbred horse race

The Breeders' Cup Classic is a Grade I Weight for Age thoroughbred horse race for 3-year-olds and older run at a distance of 1 ¹⁄₄ miles (2,000 m) on dirt. It is held annually at a different racetrack as part of the Breeders' Cup World Championships in late October or early November. All of the races to date have been held in the United States except for the 1996 edition held at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Wild Again was an American Thoroughbred racehorse by Icecapade out of Bushel-N-Peck. He was broken by Tommy Akin, but for the majority of his career was trained by Vincent Timphony. Bred by W Paul Little and owned by Black Chip Stables, he is most famous for winning the inaugural Breeders' Cup Classic in 1984 over Slew o' Gold and Gate Dancer in a famous stretch run where all three battled head-to-head to the finish line. In a thrilling conclusion to the richest race in history during that time, long shot Wild Again survived both a wild bumping match in the stretch with Slew o' Gold and Gate Dancer and a steward's inquiry to win the $3 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Hollywood Park Racetrack.

Nearctic was a Canadian-bred Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse.

Racing career

At age three Milwaukee Brew began his racing career at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, before going south to compete in the United States.

Milwaukee Brew had his best earnings year in 2002 when he won the Californian Stakes and the first of his Santa Anita Handicaps, as well as running third in the Hollywood Gold Cup, Pacific Classic, and 2002 Breeders' Cup Classic (behind winner Volponi and runner-up Medaglia d'Oro).

The Californian Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually during the first week of June at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. The Grade II event is open to horses age three and up willing to race one and one-eighth miles on the dirt. This race serves as a key prep to the Hollywood Gold Cup.

The Santa Anita Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in early March at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. It is a Grade I race for horses four years old and up and is considered the most important race for older horses in North America during the winter racing season. The ten-furlong Santa Anita Handicap offers a purse of $1 million.

Volponi is an American Thoroughbred racehorse. Bred by trainer Philip G. Johnson's family operation, Amherst Stable, he was sired by Florida Derby winner Cryptoclearance. His dam, Prom Knight, was a daughter of the 1987 Irish Derby winner Sir Harry Lewis, who was a son of the great French runner Alleged, who won back-to-back editions of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Stud record

Retired after the 2003 racing season with earnings of more than $2.8 million, Milwaukee Brew stands at stud at his owner's Adena Springs South in Williston, Florida. His offspring's thirteen wins in 2008 were the most that year of any second-crop sire.

Adena Springs has won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Breeder eight times, one of which was Stronach winning the award in his own name. Adena Springs has won the Canadian Sovereign Award for Outstanding Breeder six times, plus four earlier wins under Stronach's own name.

Williston is a city in Levy County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 2,768. The city was established before 1885 by J. M. Willis, who named it after himself.

Throughout most of his racing career, Mucho Macho Man was primarily owned by Dean and Patti Reeves of Reeves Thoroughbred Racing of Suwanee, Georgia. They purchased a majority interest in him after his first race in 2010, and in 2012 became his sole owners. In February 2014, Frank Stronach purchased an undisclosed share in the horse on behalf of his Adena Springs Farms, owner of Mucho Macho Man's sire, Macho Uno. The stallion now lives at Adena Springs and began to stand at stud in the 2015 breeding season.
