Sir Mir Laiq Ali Khan,Salar Jung II KCIE (died 7 July 1889) was a former Prime Minister of Hyderabad State (1884–1887). He belonged to the noble Salar Jung family. He is also known for authoring the Persian-language travelogue Vaqayeʿ-e Mosaferat.
Mir Laiq Ali Khan was the son of Mir Turab Ali Khan,Salar Jung I. He was educated at the Madrasa-i-Aliya,and subsequently studied in England in 1882,for less than a year. In 1883,he received the title of 'Salar Jung' from the Nizam of Hyderabad. [1]
In 1884,aged twenty-two,Salar Jung II was appointed diwan (Prime Minister) of Hyderabad. [1] During his tenure,he ordered the official language of Hyderabad State to be shifted from Persian to Urdu. [2] Though initially close to the incumbent Nizam,Mahboob Ali Khan,he later fell out of favour and resigned from the post of Prime Minister in April 1887. [1]
In May 1887,Salar Jung II embarked on a tour of Europe,managed by entrepreneur Moreton Frewen. Towards the end of his journey,while venturing in England,he was awarded the title Knight Commander of the Indian Empire by Queen Victoria. He documented his experiences abroad in a Persian-language travelogue titled 'Vaqayeʿ-e Mosaferat'. The work is one of the last Indo-Persian travelogues. [1]
Salar Jung II died of an alcohol-related illness on 7 July 1889,two months after he returned to Hyderabad from his journey. He was aged 27. [1] His son,Mir Yousuf Ali Khan,Salar Jung III,born 4 June 1889,was only one month old at this time.
Hyderabad State was an independent monarchy/princely state/country located in the south-central Deccan region of Indian Subcontinent with its capital at the city of Hyderabad. It is now divided into the present-day state of Telangana,the Kalyana-Karnataka region of Karnataka,and the Marathwada region of Maharashtra in India.
Nizam of Hyderabad was the title of the ruler of Hyderabad State. Nizam is a shortened form of Niẓām ul-Mulk,which means Administrator of the Realm,and was the title bestowed upon Asaf Jah I when he was appointed Viceroy of the Deccan by the Mughal Emperor Farrukhsiyar. Asaf Jah VI,also known as Sir Mir Mahboob Ali Khan Siddiqi Bayafandi,was the 9th Nizam of Hyderabad. He ruled Hyderabad State,one of the princely states of India,between 1869 and 1911.
Mir Osman Ali Khan,Asaf Jah VII was the last Nizam (ruler) of the Princely State of Hyderabad,the largest princely state in British India. He ascended the throne on 29 August 1911,at the age of 25 and ruled the Kingdom of Hyderabad between 1911 and 1948,until India annexed it. He was styled as His Exalted Highness (H.E.H) the Nizam of Hyderabad,and was widely considered one of the world's wealthiest people of all time. With some estimate placing his wealth at 2% of U.S. GDP,his portrait was on the cover of Time magazine in 1937. As a semi-autonomous monarch,he had his mint,printing his currency,the Hyderabadi rupee,and had a private treasury that was said to contain £100 million in gold and silver bullion,and a further £400 million of jewels. The major source of his wealth was the Golconda mines,the only supplier of diamonds in the world at that time. Among them was the Jacob Diamond,valued at some £50 million,and used by the Nizam as a paperweight.
Paigah family was a noble family from the former Hyderabad State. The family maintained their own court,individual palaces,and a standing army of about fourteen thousand infantry and cavalry troops.
Mirza Nizam Ali Khan Siddiqi,Asaf Jah II was the 5th Nizam of Hyderabad State in South India between 1762 and 1803. He was born on 7 March 1734 as fourth son to Asaf Jah I and Umda Begum. His official name is Asaf Jah II,Nizam ul-Mulk,Nizam ud-Daula,Nawab Mir Nizam 'Ali Khan Siddiqi,Fateh Jang,Sipah Salar,Nawab Subedar of the Deccan. Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan,Salar Jung III (1889–1949),commonly known as Salar Jung III,was a nobleman and art collector from Hyderabad Deccan. In 1912,at the age of twenty-three,Salar Jung III succeeded Maharaja Sir Kishen Pershad as Prime Minister and served for two and a half years. She lived in a period when Dakhini was making its transition into the highly Persianized Urdu. Her literary contributions provide insight into such linguistic transformations in southern India.
