Mira Sharpless Townsend (26 September 1798 - 20 November 1859) [1] [2] was a Quaker social activist and reformer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [3] [4] Townsend was the driving force behind the creation of the Rosine Association, which supported destitute women, and was the first organization of its kind run entirely by and for women. [1]
Mira Sharpless was born in Philadelphia on 26 September 1798, the daughter of Jesse Sharpless, a saddle and harness maker, and Joanna Townsend Sharpless., both birthright members of the Concord Monthly Meeting. [5] [6] [1] She was directly descended from Richard Townsend, who had come to America with William Penn on the ship Welcome. [1] She attended Friends Select School, where she excelled, and was noted for her skill in writing. [1] Most of Sharpless' siblings were active in the Society of Friends.
In 1828, Sharpless married Samuel Townsend (1800-1887), a fellow Quaker. [1] Of the couple's six children, only two survived to adulthood: Emily Sharpless Townsend and Clara Gordon Townsend. [3] [1]
From the 1840s, Townsend became an outspoken social activist, publishing articles and poetry expressing her views on subjects including capital punishment, temperance, women's rights, and slavery. [4] Townsend spearheaded the creation of the Rosine Association, which focused on providing assistance to women. [4] Her hopes were first announced at a meeting of the Society for the Abolition of Capital Punishment in January 1847, when Townsend expressed a desire to form "a society to open a house for the reformation and employment and instruction of unfortunate women who had led immoral lives." [4] [1] This was established as the Rosina Home. [1] As the first organization of its kind run entirely by and for women, the Rosine Association was unique and trailblazing. [7] [1] Sharpless wrote of her feeling that:
it was her duty, having been given the health and ability, to help the friendless and the unfortunate, to give them the power as far as she could to make for themselves a name, a position and a respectable living. [1]
As one of a five-person committee, Townsend helped to create the Association's constitution. [4] She served as a manager and treasurer until her death. [4] In 1854, Townsend and Sophia Lewis successfully petitioned the legislature in Harrisburg for funding to support the Rosine Association. [4] Detailed casebooks, held today by Swarthmore College, contain accounts of the "Rosines": women who passed through the Rosine Home. [7] These women were supported in learning skills, and supporting themselves by selling wares they produced. [7] The Rosina Home inspired similar institutions in Baltimore, New Orleans, Providence, and Cincinnati. [1] In 1849, Townsend, her sister Eliza Parker, and others, established a boarding house for destitute women and children, the Temporary Home. [4] [1] This was described as:
a transient boarding house for respectable women out of employment, where those with funds can be accommodated at a moderate board, and those without be received until suitable situations can be procured for them; and where also destitute children can be taken care of until suitable homes can be procured; and to secure from fraud and imposition a class of persons whose homeless situation exposes them to the arts of the vicious and designing, and to provide a safe shelter. Mira Sharpless Townsend died on 20 November 1859 [1] and was buried at Fair Hill Burial Ground. [7]
Sharpless' papers are held today in the Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College, which describes her as "a major Quaker social activist and reformer". [4] Speaking on the acquisition of the papers, the Friends Historical Library curator, Jordan Landes, said of Sharpless that:
She was in the vanguard of a group of 19th-century women who reimagined their roles in bringing positive change to the world outside of their home circle... Her distinctive voice shines through more than a century after her death, presenting the stories of Philadelphia's 19th-century female underclass in a matter-of-fact tone, with rich detail. [7]
Emily Howland was a philanthropist, humanitarian, and educator. She supported the education of African-Americans. She was also a strong supporter of women's rights and the temperance movement. Howland personally financed the education of many black students and contributed to institutions such as the Tuskegee Institute, Henry Damon Davidson's Centerville Industrial Institute, and Kowaliga Institute in Kowaliga, Alabama where Howland Hall was named for her.
Friends Select School (FSS) is a college-preparatory, Quaker school for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade located at 1651 Benjamin Franklin Parkway at the intersection of Cherry and N. 17th Streets in Center City Philadelphia. Quaker education in Philadelphia dates back to 1689. Friends Select, which was founded in 1833, has been located on this site since 1885.

The Religious Society of Friends, commonly known as Quakers, encouraged some values which may have been conducive to encouraging scientific talents. A theory suggested by David Hackett Fischer in his book Albion's Seed indicated early Quakers in the US preferred "practical study" to the more traditional studies of Greek or Latin popular with the elite. Another theory suggests their avoidance of dogma or clergy gave them a greater flexibility in response to science.

Isaac Tatem Hopper was an American abolitionist who was active in Philadelphia and New York City in the anti-slavery movement and protecting fugitive slaves and free blacks from slave kidnappers. He was also co-founder of Children's Village with 23 others.
Deborah Fisher Wharton (1795–1888) was an American Quaker minister, suffragist, social reformer and proponent of women's rights. She was one of a small group of dedicated Quakers who founded Swarthmore College along with her industrialist son, Joseph Wharton. She was a contemporary and friend of Lucretia Mott and had many of Mott's sympathies but did not actively pursue the women's rights cause, rather she was a proponent of liberal Quaker spirituality.
Lucretia Mott was an American Quaker, abolitionist, women's rights activist, and social reformer. She had formed the idea of reforming the position of women in society when she was amongst the women excluded from the World Anti-Slavery Convention held in London in 1840. In 1848, she was invited by Jane Hunt to a meeting that led to the first public gathering about women's rights, the Seneca Falls Convention, during which the Declaration of Sentiments was written.
Graceanna Lewis was an American naturalist, illustrator, and social reformer. An expert in the field of ornithology, Lewis is remembered as a pioneer female American scientist as well as an activist in the anti-slavery, temperance, and women's suffrage movements.
Fair Hill Burial Ground is a historic cemetery in the Fairhill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded by the Religious Society of Friends in 1703, it fell into disuse until the 1840s when it was revived by the Hicksite Quaker community of Philadelphia, which played an important role in the abolition and early women's rights movements. The cemetery is currently operated by the Fair Hill Burial Corporation, which is owned by Quakers and neighborhood community members.

Chapman was president of the Woman Suffrage Association of Brooklyn, which office she resigned to become president of the New York State Woman Suffrage Association.
Martha Schofield was a Hicksite Quaker abolitionist and suffragist who founded a school in Aiken, South Carolina, for freed African Americans.

Dorothy Hewitt Hutchinson was an American peace, civil rights and environmental activist, lecturer and author during the twentieth century. An advocate of nuclear disarmament, she became the president of American branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) in 1961 and the international chair of WILPF in 1965, the first American woman to hold that position since Jane Addams co-founded the organization in 1915.
