The ship Eleonore, or Mission Eleonore, is a former fishing vessel which was operated on the Mediterranean Sea by the German NGO Mission Lifeline for the rescue of shipwrecked refugees. Following the confiscation in summer 2018 of their previous rescue ship Lifeline , Eleonore sailed for a single mission which ended with the confiscation of Eleonore in turn. In the one mission undertaken, Eleonore rescued 104 people from drowning.

Benjamin Hartmann, owner of the statement fashion label HUMAN BLOOD, officially acted as the buyer for the purchase of the fishing boat Eleonore in May 2019. [6] [7] The subsequent conversion to a rescue ship was financed by the donor and Mission Lifeline. [8] According to the association's founder, Axel Steier , it was necessary to use a 'straw man' because the authorities were unlikely to let him or his captain register a rescue ship. [7]
Eleonore, registered as a pleasure boat, set out at the end of August 2019 for the sea area off the Libyan coast, under the command of Claus-Peter Reisch . [9] The crew was informed of the position of a struggling rubber dinghy by the Alarm-Phone-Initiative and finally took on a total of 104 people [10] from the dinghy. Both Italy and Malta refused requests to enter their ports, so the overcrowded rescue ship had to be supplied with food and water on the high seas. [11] At the beginning of September, after violent thunderstorms, Reisch declared the Eleonore an emergency due to a life-threatening situation on board, and ran into the Sicilian port of Pozzallo accompanied by the Italian coast guard. This, however, was contrary to the instructions of Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, and the Eleonore was then confiscated by the Italian police. [12] [4] [3]
Lifeline is a small rescue boat, formerly an inshore fisheries research vessel of the Fisheries Research Services currently seized by Maltese authorities due to disputed ownership, ship classification, home port documentation and flag registration. The captain, Claus-Peter Reisch appeared in a Maltese court charged with commanding an improperly registered ship and was released on a 10,000-euro bail.

SOS Méditerranée is a European, maritime-humanitarian organisation for the rescue of life at sea, currently operating in the Mediterranean sea in international waters north of Libya. The organization chartered the Aquarius and more recently the Ocean Viking in order to rescue people fleeing by sea from Libya and who risk drowning. The group was founded in June 2015 by German former captain Klaus Vogel and Frenchwoman Sophie Beau after the Italian navy ended the rescue Operation Mare Nostrum in 2014. Its headquarters are in Marseille (France), Milan (Italy), Frankfurt (Germany), Geneva (Switzerland).
Jugend Rettet is a non-governmental organization (NGO) from Berlin. Its goal is to save drowning persons at the Mediterranean Sea. Operations are conducted with the Iuventa, a ship that sails under Dutch flag. This ship was seized in August 2017 after suspicion of cooperation with migrant smugglers.

The Mare Liberum is a ship operated privately by the Berlin-based human rights organization of the same name. Mare Liberum e.V. has been monitoring human rights in the Aegean Sea since 2018. Until 2018, the ship was used as Sea-Watch for the "Sea-Watch e.V." association. The ship is operated under the German flag.
The Humanity 1 is a German Search and Rescue Ship. The former German research ship is owned by SOS Humanity, having previously been owned by Sea-Watch e. V., who use the ship for SAR operations of refugees in distress on the Mediterranean Sea. Previously, the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (GEOMAR) operated the ship under the name of Poseidon, after the Greek god of the sea, with the State of Schleswig-Holstein as the owner. In January 2020 the ship was auctioned and bought by Sea-Watch e. V. and renamed Sea-Watch 4 on 20 February 2020; the ship was further re-named, to Humanity 1, in August 2022.
Proem-Aid is a Spanish NGO which operates in the Mediterranean Sea with the aims of aiding and rescuing those in distress on the water. It was formed by a group of emergency service workers who volunteered their time and expertise, and initially operated off Lesbos beginning in December 2015 before also starting an operation in the central Mediterranean in September 2017.
