Papa Kwame Amponsa, known by his stage name Mista Silva, [1] is a British-Ghanaian musician from Brockley, London with origins from West Africa Ghana. Mista Silva released his debut EP, Full Vim, in 2012. Its success led to a record single deal with Polydor universal in 2014. [2] He was the first unsigned UK Afrobeats artist to have his music playlisted by BBC 1Xtra, [3] with well received tracks "Boom Boom Tah" and "Now Wats Up" . He has had his music played by national radio stations such as Capital Xtra and Kiss FM. [4] As part of BBC 1Xtra's Destination Africa he performed on the BBC Live Lounge for Trevor Nelson [5] He has walked for Fashion label Ashish [6] and has been blogged about by fashion and culture publications I-D Magazine [7] Fader, Complex, Notion and Wonderland. [8] Mista Silva has also won a GUBA Award (Ghana UK Based Achievement), UMA (Urban Music Award), and three MOBO Award Nominations in the category of "Best African Act". When interviewed by popular online publication Noisey, BBC DJ Twin B, cited Mista Silva as one to watch for the future [9] The Guardian newspaper also listed Mista Silva as one of eight Afrobeats artists to listen to. Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, known professionally as Wizkid, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. A prominent figure in the modern-day Afrobeats music scene, Wizkid is regarded as one of the biggest and most influential African artists of all time. He began recording music at the age of 11 and released a collaborative album with the Glorious Five (5), a group he and a couple of his church friends formed. In 2009, Wizkid signed a record deal with Banky W's Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E). Afroswing, also known as Afrobashment, or less commonly Afrobbean or Afro-trap, is a genre of music that developed in the UK during the mid-2010s, derivative of dancehall and afrobeats, with influences from trap, hip hop, R&B, and grime. Commercially, the genre has been very successful, with many afroswing artists making it into the British charts.
Afrobeats, or Afro-pop or Afro-fusion, is an umbrella term to describe popular music from West Africa and the diaspora that initially developed in Nigeria, Ghana, and the UK in the 2000s and 2010s. Afrobeats is less of a style per se, and more of a descriptor for the fusion of sounds flowing out of Ghana and Nigeria.
