Mitu Khandaker is a British game designer and engineer who is the founder of The Tiniest Shark and Glow Up Games. She is an Associate Arts Professor at NYU Tisch School of Arts, specifically within the Game Center. [1] During her time at NYU, she was also the Chief Creative Officer at Spirit AI, an artificial intelligence London-based company that aims to fight cyberbullying behaviors to foster safer online communities. Khandaker was featured in the 2021-2022 #IfThen Exhibit which celebrates women innovators in STEM,[ citation needed ] has been interviewed at GameCity for her work on Redshirt, [3] and has won the Breakthrough BAFTA and Creative English Trailblazer awards. [4]

Education

Khandaker received her master's degree in computer engineering from the University of Portsmouth, where she also later received her PhD in game design. [4]

Career

Khandaker was the founder and sole-developer of The Tiniest Shark. In 2013–2014, The Tiniest Shark developed and found success launching a video game called Redshirt [5] which is a science-fiction social networking game.

Glow Up Games is a mobile/XR studio that creates games and narrates stories for diverse audiences. It was co-founded by Khandaker and Latoya Peterson. [6] In collaboration with HBO, Glow Up Games launched a mobile game called Insecure: The Come Up which is based on the HBO series Insecure. The game allows users to play as Issa Dee, the fictional main character of the show, as she creates a life in L.A. [7] The star of the show, Issa Rae, was involved in the development of the game as a consultant. [6]

Redshirt is a social simulation game developed by Mitu Khandaker, developing under the company name The Tiniest Shark, and published by Positech Games for Windows, MacOS, and iOS. The game follows the player's custom character as they work through a fictional social media account as they try to "climb the ladder" on a space station. The game's title refers to a redshirt, a stock character in fiction who dies soon after being introduced.

Rap Sh!t is an American comedy television series created by Issa Rae for HBO Max. The show is produced by Hoorae Productions and 3 Arts Entertainment and centers on two Miami-based rappers who try to find success in the music industry. The series debuted at the American Black Film Festival on June 18, 2022, and was released on July 21, 2022. It was renewed for a second season in September 2022, which premiered on November 9, 2023. The season was originally set to debut on August 10, 2023, but was delayed due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. In January 2024, the series was canceled after two seasons.

Sweet Life: Los Angeles is an American reality television series created by Issa Rae. It premiered on August 19, 2021, on HBO Max. In October 2021, it was renewed for a second season which premiered on August 4, 2022. In December 2022, the series was canceled after two seasons.
