Miva, Inc. is a privately owned ecommerce shopping cart software and hosting company with headquarters in San Diego, California and a data center in Tampa, Florida. Miva Merchant's ecommerce software runs on its proprietary scripting language, MIVA Script.

History

Miva Merchant began in 1996 as the HTMLScript Corporation. In 1997, the company released its first catalogue-based ecommerce product, KoolKat. Shortly after KoolKat's release, the name of the company was changed to Miva, Inc, and KoolKat was renamed Miva Merchant. Since that time, there have been several updates to Miva Merchant's core software, leading up to the most recent version, Miva Merchant 9. Just prior to the release of MM9, the company name returned to Miva, Inc.

In 2003 the company was purchased by FindWhat.com which changed its name to Miva, Inc in 2005. [1] [2]

Present day

In 2007, the company underwent significant management changes, and was acquired by a group of investors and original Miva, Inc employees. [3] The company name was changed to Miva Merchant, Inc. at that time in order to differentiate itself from the original Miva, Inc. [4]

In 2008, Miva Merchant released Miva Merchant 5.5, [5] a core software update that added improved features and functionality.[ citation needed ]

In 2009, Miva Merchant became a certified provider with Chase Paymentech Orbital Gateway, [6] which allows merchants to accept real-time credit card transactions and multiple payment types via Chase with their Miva Merchant-powered storefront.

In 2011, Miva Merchant released an add-on mobile framework, and a streaming update for current customers (PR8), both of which were mentioned by Miva Merchant President and COO Rick Wilson in a July 19 interview with Practical Ecommerce. [7]

In January 2012, Miva Merchant was named one of the top ten e-commerce technology companies by BuiltWith Technology Usage Statistics. [8]

Over the years, Miva Merchant [9] has formed a number of strategic partnerships [10] with businesses specializing in email marketing, product reviews, and related ecommerce applications.

Each March, Miva Merchant hosts a conference [11] in San Diego, California, for developers, store owners, and other Miva Merchant community members.

In September 2014, Miva Merchant changed its company name back to Miva. [12]

Awards and recognitions

Miva ranked 15 out of the Union Tribune's Top 40 Workplaces in San Diego. [13]

Authorize.Net

Authorize.Net is a United States-based payment gateway service provider, allowing merchants to accept credit card and electronic check payments through their website and over an Internet Protocol (IP) connection. Founded in 1996, Authorize.Net is now a subsidiary of Visa Inc. Its service permits customers to enter credit card and shipping information directly onto a web page, in contrast to some alternatives that require the customer to sign up for a payment service before performing a transaction.

Magento

Magento is an open-source e-commerce platform written in PHP. It uses multiple other PHP frameworks such as Laminas and Symfony. Magento source code is distributed under Open Software License (OSL) v3.0. Magento was acquired by Adobe Inc in May 2018 for $1.68 billion.

Block, Inc. is an American financial services and digital payments company based in San Francisco, California. The company was founded in 2009 by Jack Dorsey and Jim McKelvey and launched its first platform in 2010. It has been traded as a public company on the New York Stock Exchange since November 2015 with the ticker symbol SQ.

Strands Recommender is an SaaS plug-and-play recommendation engine that can be installed by eCommerce and content websites. The company is an independent business unit of Strands, Inc, founded in early 2004.

LemonStand was a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, that developed cloud-based computer software for online retailers. LemonStand was shut down on June 5th, 2019.

GoPago

GoPago was a cloud-based mobile payment platform with an integrated point of sale system, based in Pasadena, CA. GoPago's payment platform allows customers to purchase orders in advance of arriving at brick-and-mortar merchants and merchants to manage orders in real-time. In August 2012, GoPago released GoPago LIVE, an application-based tablet point of sale system, which are free to merchants. GoPago's mobile payments platform is cloud-based, which allows transactions processing without near-field communications or QR-code technologies. On December 11, 2013, Amazon reached an agreement with GoPago to buy a license to its technology and hire certain members of its engineering team. On December 20, 2013, mobile commerce company DoubleBeam acquired all of the assets of GoPago, including all customers, systems, products, brand name and IP portfolio. On February 20, 2015, DoubleBeam was acquired by Verifone, Inc, and GoPago was subsequently rebranded as Verifone Cloud POS.

Covario, Inc. was an American search marketing agency and technology firm based in San Diego, California. The company specialized in international search engine marketing services and provided software tools for SEO, paid search, social media marketing, analytics, and local search optimization. Its customer base included technology, consumer electronics, financial services, retail, ecommerce, media, entertainment, publishing, and consumer packaged goods organizations. Covario was acquired by the Dentsu Aegis Network in September 2014, and combined with iProspect, the network's performance marketing arm, in early 2015.

X-Cart is a commercial open source shopping cart platform distributed through the SaaS solution, or via download package. In 2012 they had sales of 32 million. Their CEO is Renee Thomas-Jacobs and all of their 118 employees are based in the United States.

Shift4Shop is a technology company that develops e-commerce software for businesses. The company was founded in 1997 with headquarters in Tamarac, FL. Shift4Shop develops electronic commerce application for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.

ClearSale

ClearSale is a fraud management and chargeback protection services company that was founded in Brazil in 2001. It has offices in Miami, Florida in the United States and São Paulo, Brazil and over 1,000 employees ClearSale works with e-commerce companies to identify fraudulent transactions. Its fraud detection software combines machine learning with human interaction. ClearSale works with major brands including Calvin Klein, Chanel, Ray-Ban, Sony, Staples, Inc. and Walmart.[2]
