The University of California, Berkeley is a public land-grant research university in Berkeley, California. Established in 1868 as the University of California, it is the state's first land-grant university and the founding campus of the University of California system. Stakeholders convened, proposing legislation that creates new jobs for the new economy.
Dean Spade is an American lawyer, writer, trans activist, and associate professor of law at Seattle University School of Law. In 2002, he founded the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, a non-profit law collective in New York City that provides free legal services to transgender, intersex and gender non-conforming people who are low-income and/or people of color. Spade was a staff attorney at SRLP from 2002 to 2006, during which time he presented testimony to the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission and helped achieve a major victory for transgender youth in foster care in the Jean Doe v. Bell case. Spade was also involved with the campaign in 2009 to stop Seattle from building a new jail.
Viva Rio, a nongovernmental organization based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was founded in December 1993 to combat the growing violence in the city. Ananya Roy is a scholar of international development and global urbanism. Born in Calcutta, India (1970), Roy is Professor and Meyer and Renee Luskin Chair in Inequality and Democracy at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. She has been a professor of City and Regional Planning and Distinguished Chair in Global Poverty and Practice at the University of California, Berkeley. She holds a Bachelor of Comparative Urban Studies (1992) degree from Mills College, and Master of City Planning (1994) and Doctor of Philosophy (1999) degrees from the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of California at Berkeley.
imMEDIAte Justice Productions is a non-profit organization that teaches hands-on filmmaking and media literacy with a focus on Reproductive Justice to youth in the East and South Los Angeles areas. It was founded by Sylvia Raskin, Laney Rupp, and Tani Ikeda in 2008. The current program director is Tani Ikeda, who is a director/cinematographer working in Los Angeles. The program curriculum focuses on teaching documentary-style filmmaking with the aim of encouraging students to share their personal experiences.
The Center on Race and Social Problems (CRSP) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work was designed to address societal problems through research, intervention, and education. It is the first center of its kind to be housed in a school of social work and it is unique in both its multidisciplinary approach and its multiracial focus. The mission of CRSP is to conduct solution-oriented social science research on race, ethnicity, and color and their influence on the quality of life for Americans in the 21st century. CRSP has identified seven major areas of race-related social problems: economic disparities; educational disparities; interracial group relations; mental health practices and outcomes; youth, families, and the elderly; criminal justice; and health.
The Alameda County, California Women's Hall of Fame has existed since 1993. It is overseen by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, and members of the "Commission on the Status of Women". Nomination categories include athletes, community builders, youth, environmentalists, philanthropy. The Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore has produced a number of inductees in the science and engineering fields. Many of the inductees listed here are in law enforcement, or legal assistance careers. Their website claims in excess of 250 inductees. The list includes community builders from a wide spectrum of cultural backgrounds. Ceremonies to announce the latest class of inductees usually occurs in the spring of every year.
