Mofid University was founded by Abdul-Karim Mousavi Ardebili, the former head of Iran's Judiciary in 1989 as a private and non-profit institution. [1] Departments such as Economics, Law, Philosophy, Political Science and English Language have also been established since 1989, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 2006 respectively.

The site is under the control of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI). It is the second Iranian uranium enrichment facility, the other one being that of Natanz.
