Mohamed Duale

Mohamed Dahir Duale (born 13 July 1962 in Garissa) is a Kenyan health professional and politician. He is a member of the Kenyan national Assembly from Dadaab Constituency elected on the ticket of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). [1] Before joining politics, he worked in various capacities with Kenyan Ministry of Health and World Health Organisation (WHO).

Education and career

Mohamed Duale was born in 1962 in Garissa where he was educated at Garissa Boys Town Primary School before proceeding to Garbatula High School where studied for his O-Level and A-Level from 1978 to 1983. He earned a bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery form University of Nairobi in 1990 and studied for a master’s degree in public health at the University of Leeds, United Kingdom from 1997 to 1998. [2]

He started his medical career in 1990 with Kenyan Ministry of health in various capacities in different public hospitals in Kenya until 1994. He was district medical officer between 1995 and 1996 when he became provincial medical officer, North Eastern Province. In 1997, he proceeded on a study leave and returned in 1999 serving until 2001 when he joined the WHO as national surveillance officer and remained in this position until 2006. He joined Kenya Red Cross in 2008 and served in different positions including chairman Kenya Red Cross, North Eastern Province and member of its National Executive Council in Kenya. [2]

He joined politics in 2013 and was nominated by Orange Democratic Movement and CORD Coalition to run for the newly created Dadaab Constituency which he won. In the 11th parliament, he served on the house committee on health. [3] [4]

From late 2011 to 2014, Kenya experienced an upsurge in violent terrorist attacks. Kenyan government officials asserted that many of the murders and blasts were carried out by al-Shabaab in retaliation for Operation Linda Nchi, a coordinated military mission between the Somalian military and Kenyan military that began in October 2011, when troops from Kenya crossed the border into the conflict zones of southern Somalia. According to Kenyan security experts, the bulk of the attacks were increasingly carried out by radicalized Kenyan youth who were hired for the purpose. Kenya security officials also indicated that they were part of death squads, which carried out many of the killings under the orders of a government security council. By mid-2014, the cumulative attacks began affecting Kenya's tourism industry, as Western nations issued travel warnings to their citizens.

Yusuf Hassan Abdi is a Kenyan politician, diplomat, social activist and former journalist. After working many years with the United Nations, he joined the Kenya parliament as a legislator in 2011.

On 2 April 2015, gunmen stormed the Garissa University College in Garissa, Kenya, killing 148 people, and injuring 79 or more. The militant groups Al-Qaeda and Al-Shabaab, which the gunmen claimed to be from, took responsibility for the attack. The gunmen took over 700 students hostage, freeing Muslims and killing those who identified as Christians. The siege ended the same day, when all four of the attackers were killed. Five men were later arrested in connection with the attack, and a bounty was placed for the arrest of a suspected organizer.

Abdikadir Omar Aden is a Kenyan politician a member of the 11th parliament of Kenya elected from Balambala Constituency, Garissa County on the ticket of Orange Democratic Movement in 2013. He lost his reelection bid in 2017.

Mohamed Muktar Shidiye is a Kenyan politician and a member of the 8th and 11th Kenyan parliament for Lagdera Constituency, Garissa County. He was first elected to the 8th national assembly in 1997 on the ticket of Kenya African National Union (KANU) party and served as deputy government chief whip of KANU party in the parliament. He was defeated in the 2002 election by Abdillahi Sheikh Dahir and beaten again in 2007 by Farah Maalim whom he had defeated in his first parliamentary election win in 1997. He reclaimed the seat in 2013 on the ticket of TNA party with the support of Jubilee Coalition. Prior to election to the parliament, he served as district officer (DO) for Meru District in the early 1990s.

Ahmed Ibrahim Abass is a Kenyan politician and a member of the 11th Kenyan parliament from Ijara Constituency in Garissa County.
